A brilliant continuation of an incredible series
I thoroughly enjoyed this instalment of the series’s, Anthony Riches maintains to keep his characters engaging, immerse you into Roman life, and keeps the history alive l. And the gallows humour of the military is a good as ever

Excellent further episode.
A much anticipated addition to the excellent Empire series. A different reader (for the audio version) which took a bit of getting used to, but not in any way inferior.I was slightly surprised it wasn’t a but longer but the pace, the action, the tension, the excitement and the fascinating detail are all there in customary abundance.Roll on book XV!!

Another fantastic book
From the Hadrian's wall to the Asia campaign these books have been amazing. Well balanced between action and espionage . Can't wait for the next one.

Great read with interesting turns
This series is good in general though it has its moments of Action-Superhero-Too-Much. In this part, the author just developed a nice, exciting story which splits into different phases. A little bit if spy-action, a little bit of power-plotting, and of course some battle-fighting. I liked it and look hence forward to the next part.

La saga continua e non delude
Come sempre Anthony Riches è una garanzia . Finito il libro in pochi giorni aspetto già di poter leggere il nuovo capitolo della saga.

Reminded me of the older Empire Books (in the best ways)
The character work was brilliant, and, at least to my mind, had many callbacks to the earlier books in the series. The comradery and bonhomie of the characters is as endearing as ever, and the tension in the final battle ratchets up brilliantly. Well done Riches!

Great characters!
Number 14 in the "Empire" series. This book is centered on the Year of Five Emperors, around AD 193. Like the previous book we're still dealing with Severus and Niger. The bulk of the story is set-up for the showdown between the legions of each contender. Some of these scenes were still quite good! Particularly the sneaking into enemy camps, pulling fast ones on legates, or the awful Sartorius. Severus and Niger have fought before, but matters weren't definitively settled. This time the battle takes place in Nicea.I enjoyed the characters as usual, but there really wasn't any deep growth this time. Another minor complaint: Dubnus wasn't given sufficient page time. I always liked him! But there IS a terrific new First Spear named Draco and he stole every scene he was in.The author said he's going to be writing more books in this series for some time to come, so that's good news!
