How to Make Repeat Patterns: A Guide for Designers, Architects and Artists

Paul Jackson's "How to Make Repeat Patterns" is the best book I've found for learning how to make repeat patterns. It would be useful for artists and crafters of all kinds (I'm using it to design my own embroidery patterns). Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, designing repeat patterns is great exercise for your brain, sharpening attention and creating calm at the same time. Jackson is an experienced teacher, and it shows: the book is clearly organized, with every basic principle explained and illustrated. As with any other skill, you have to practice what he teaches before you'll really understand the principles and be able to use them. This is not a book of pattern examples. If that's what you're looking for, try "Handbook of Regular Patterns," by Peter Stevens--or treat yourself to one of the many books on textile or rug designs from India, Turkey, or the Caucasus.

My nephew is studying fashion design. I buy this book for him. This book is over expectations. The book give you so many rules to make your own creativity. I’m so happy to buy this book.

Great book with lots of helpful information for designing patterns.

I never knew there were only a limited number of symmetrical operations for creating patterns until I bought this book. Also, I really liked how Jackson encouraged a more thorough review of the book’s contents instead of just flipping through it.

Lots of good ideas for laying out repeat patterns that I wouldn’t have thought of! Can’t wait to really put it to use!

I flipped through this book and quickly returned it. It does indeed provide a bunch of repeating patterns but as a designer of repeating patterns, it is a perfect example of why I get jobs after Engineers fail. The patterns are very mathematical but still, boring, and lack imagination. And as for the Typographic pattern ideas shown in this book, they are an atrocity to typography.

Straightforward, clear. Tessellations - love them. I’m interested in patterns for quilts.

Not useful for print design. Its a waste of money.

I must say I wasn't expecting that much from this book given the price range. When I received it though I was surprised to see it's a vital go-to reference for all pattern and surface designers. It's beautifully laid out and provides the reader with all the basics about tiling composition and repeat fundamentals. This is a purchase I won't regret!
