As a homebrewer, I'm always looking for ways to improve my fermentation process. That's why I decided to grab these Industrial & Scientific Magnetic Stir Bars for my stir plate. Here's my take:Solid Build Quality - Perfect for Yeast Starters:These stir bars are very well-made. They're a good weight and feel sturdy, and the white PTFE coating seems smooth and secure. I'm confident they'll hold up well to the rigors of stirring yeast starters for my homebrew.Small Package, Big Mishap (Almost!):The one thing that almost caused a major headache is the size of the container. These stir bars come in a tiny little plastic tub - handy for storage, but maybe a little too handy. My order included a bunch of other things, and I completely missed the little tub the first time I unpacked the box. Let's just say I spent a fun afternoon digging through the recycling bin before I found it!Word to the Wise: Double Check Your Package:So, a word to the wise - if you order these stir bars, double-check your entire package before tossing the box. They're small but mighty, and you don't want them ending up where mine almost did!Overall:Despite the near-miss disposal incident, I'm happy with these magnetic stir bars. They seem like a quality product that will be perfect for my homebrewing needs. Just be aware of the tiny package size so you don't accidentally throw them away!Here's who I would recommend this for:Homebrewers who use a stir plate to make yeast starters.People who appreciate a well-made stir bar.Here's who I would not recommend this for:Folks who might be easily frustrated by very small packaging.

These seem to be high quality and durable. They work as intended and come in a nice little storage container.

The media could not be loaded.  I originally purchased these PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene or Teflon®) stirring bars because my magnetic stirrer and the stirring bar that came with it seemed a little quirky. In part, this was because the provided stirring bar was an odd shape with multiple facets and it tended to “chatter” if simply dropped into the beaker; however, it would eventually settle down and stir. After the set of six stirring bars arrived, I compared the performance of the original stirring bar with one from this set but, apparently my magnetic stirrer decided to behave itself and both the original stirring bars and a stirring bar from the set of six behaved identically whether dropped in the beaker with the rotor already spinning or with the rotor still and then the speed increased (video). One problem I discovered with this set of six stirring bars – the PTFE coating on one of the bars had split (photo) compromising the chemical inertness of this stirring bar. Therefore, users should carefully inspect them prior to using them in the laboratory.PROS• Inexpensive set of six stirring bars that work well with magnetic stirrers.• Each stirring bar is coated with PTFE (refer to CONS below).CONS• One of the six stirring bars had a split in the PTFE coating compromising the chemical inertness of the stirring bar.

These are a good size for a stir bar.Expected no stick material.Works as expected.What more?

These six stir rods are a big value for the money. They are not huge, but why would you want them any bigger. They work well with my homemade stir plate (magnet from a computer hard drive mounted on a computer fan) that is used to keep yeast in suspension while it is multiplying, to be used in beer and wine brewing. My environment is by no means caustic, but the chemical and heat resistant coating is appreciated nonetheless. There were no defects in the coatings; and they came in a convenient storage case that should keep them from sticking to random tools and surfaces and getting lost. They can also double as refrigerator magnets when not stirring thing up.

Got these for some of the at home projects I've been working on. So far they work like the ones I used in grad school for chemical research. Not sure if the coating would hold up as well, but for my purposes I'm not dealing with anything nearly as caustic or degrading so should be prefect for me.
