Calligraphy (A Comprehensive Guide to Beautiful Lettering)

This book with another I have are amazing. Gives a brief history, size nib recommended and more. Highly recommend for those starting out to add to start a collection of books of calligraphy.

It is an excellent book that can let you learn all about calligraphy. It has practice pages, that you can copy and print out, tells you some of the tools that can be used, and a little bit of extra things to make your calligraphy feel extra fancy.

I really like this book tho sometimes the arrows directing each stroke aren’t really what you do, at least to me it seems this way. It takes a lot of practice for each character in each font. So make sure you take at least 20 minutes a day to practice.

It has a lot of calligraphy examples in it I would have liked a few more styles in there and a few more examples.

I found the written portion pretentious, so I skipped it. The actual step-by step instructions were easy to follow and I was surprised at how easily I was able to mimic the letters. I used a 3.8 mm Pilot Parallel pen (supposed to be good for beginners) on thick sketchbook paper and it served my purposes just fine. All in all, very pleased with this purchase and excited to practice more.

I have purchased several books on calligraphy and illuminated letters for art projects to pay homage to illuminated manuscripts. Even though this is entitled Calligraphy, it is a fantastic resource for learning illuminated lettering. Actually I think it’s my favorite. If you have an interest in illuminated letters, get this book! It really is great.

This book has the perfect blend of How-to with inspirational vignettes of historical calligraphy. I appreciate the alphabets with stroke order - the reason I bought the book. But found the small project ideas and historical examples to be fascinating and a great inspiration. This book is a wonderful and valued addition to my library!

The book has several different styles and examples of full alphabets with variations and stroke order. A great reference for learning.

カリグラフィーの解説書は、日本で欧米でもたくさん出ていますが、クラシックな書体の解説書は品切れになっているのが多いですね。この本も現出版社では品切れとなっていました。本書は2011年フランス語で刊行されて、著者自身の英語訳は2016年で、アマゾンジャパンで購入したものは5刷のようです。著者のホームページにも作例がありました。フランス語のホームページ方が例が多いようです。私はカリフラフィーの初心者で習った書体も多くないのですが、元々フランス語で書かれたので、英語圏の著書に見られない例があるのが特徴かもしれません。書体は、Uncial, Celtic, Carolingian, Gothic, French Bâtarde, Humanist, Italic, Copperplateです。それぞれの書体ごとに解説と筆順の説明があり、それらを使った装飾した例とカードなどの使用例があります。ガイドラインは水平線はありますが、斜めの線はありません。三戸美奈子「カリグラフィー・ブック増補改訂版」と読み比べて勉強中です。ちなみに呉竹のZIGペンでも本書の例を真似できそうです。

Great book full of information perfect for beginner starting out like me

This reminded me of all that I was taught presented with wonderful clarity. A beautiful book that fills a gap that I really appreciate. Thank you for this lovely volume.
