The Discovery of Heaven

Couldn’t get into it.

I find it such a shame to write this heading for my review. The opening third of the book was fascinating, unusual, and moved quickly. I especially enjoyed the opening section, which gripped my attention, but I never became engrossed at that same level again. The latter part of the book felt meandering and flabby, and I think that 150 pages could have been pulled out without any detriment to the flow.I believe that I understand the main message that Harry Mulisch considers from multiple angles in this book. I appreciate the interesting way he has tried to address the theme. Unfortunately, though, the message becomes over-emphasized as one progresses through the story. It is hammered home somewhat too hard for my tastes, and I would have preferred more subtlety.I am pleased that I persevered and reached the end of the book since it is such a renowned modern classic. It is undoubtedly worth exploring if the blurb interests you. I won’t be going back to it anymore, though.

Incredible book. Quality of writing and depth of ideas really engrossing.
