A Primer for Introducing AI into School Systems
The AI-Powered Classroom" by Andy Douglas is a primer on integrating AI into schools to support students, teachers, and administrators. The author explains AI's positive impact on student education, teacher workload, parental involvement, and administrative tasks. He outlines how AI can enhance classroom learning and streamline tasks like grading, communicating with parents, and relieving educators of administrative burdens. Douglas addresses student privacy issues, concerns that some students will be left out because of difficulties obtaining the necessary equipment, and concerns about cheating. He discusses the importance of buy-in from teachers, administrators, and parents. He emphasizes teacher and administrative education, building a support system within and outside the community to bring AI into the schools as well as having compatible software and hardware, funding, and capable IT personnel. Douglas is optimistic about AI's benefits in education, which I agree is essential. However, he acknowledges the significant learning curve and commitment teachers and administrators require to integrate AI into their workflows. Many educators are already overwhelmed, under-resourced, and fearful of the changes AI will bring. I fear these factors will hinder the universal adoption of AI and lead to the exclusion of students without resources. As Douglas states, this is a serious equity issue that needs to be addressed. Every administrator and teacher must become AI proficient. All school districts need to commit funding to train teachers and administrators and for the equipment necessary to integrate AI throughout the school system. This book is a good resource on how to begin the process.

Useful information
I am an educator and recently had an increase of my work becoming remote and seeing my students online. I realized that the grade school kids that I'm working with are teaching me about new chats (discord, certain youtubers) in which I was starting to think that I am "behind" in technology. I stumbled upon this book and wanted to use it to supplement my education not just for the work I do but also to make my life easier when doing so. I learned alot and did take some notes on different tools and how to use them as fall starts for next school year but I also appreciated that the book included solutions for ethical concerns and touched on this topic as this was one of my concerns and "fears" going in.

Great overview of AI for Educators
The author created a great overview of how educators can leverage AI. I appreciated the links to AI resources offered toward the beginning of the book. The author reassures that AI can be used to supplement, but not replace humans because educators will continue to play a key role in the learning process. Giving the book 4 instead of 5 stars, because two infographics were referenced that do not exist - location 1793 is missing a visual element on AI Grading Efficiency and location 2061 is missing a visual element on AI Education. Otherwise, great book. Highly recommend.

The gen-AI-e is out of the bottle, hopefully for the better.
Generally, the proliferation of AI in our daily lives worries me. Not in a “Terminators are coming” sense, but in a “we’ll lose our agency and become dumber” sense. But the genie is out of the bottle, so better get on with it and learn about this reality now before it’s too late. I have a 2-year-old nephew and by the time he enters the school system, AI will surely be every student’s (and teacher’s) second nature. The author of this book does a great job of walking the reader through this development. He debunks various myths, such as that AI will replace teachers or mark assignments. Unsurprisingly, the author is quite optimistic about the role of AI in the classroom, but he maintains a professional distance from the hype and underscores AI’s role as an augmenting tool, an enhancer, and not a substitute for classmates, teachers, and principals, let alone schools. I’m more relaxed, and even cautiously optimistic about it as a result of reading this book.
