A great digital thermometer for candies, is not oven safe
Purchased as a candy thermometer for fudge this year after my mercurial one broke. Easy to clean and has a pot clip. Accurate, and runs on two watch batteries with an automatic off feature when not in use. Multiple temperature settings and will beep when done. Do NOT put this in the oven. While it works fine with the clip as a candy thermometer, if used for meats you cannot put this in the oven or over a grill. You will need to skewer the meat and wait for an accurate temperature and then remove it and continue cooking as necessary.

Would buy again!
I used this digital thermometer to make soft caramels. I usually only make one batch a year, around Christmas, because I am used to using the cheap glass thermometer from Walmart. What a difference this one made! The thermometer was accurate within 2 degrees F, as the caramels came out at almost the perfect consistency that I wanted. The digital display was incredibly easy to read, and the plate located below the display piece kept the steam from fogging up the screen. With the glass thermometer I was used to squinting and wiping the tube down every 2 seconds, so this was exciting! I think I even laughed a bit while making my caramels. My husband even noticed the ease at which I was operating. I couldn't help but to take pictures and send them to my mother, insisting that she MUST buy one since she always makes caramels and other candies around the holidays. One worry I did have was if the clamp would scrape up the side of my pan. It does look cheap and a little sharp around the edges. But even with the constant stirring, the thermometer stayed in one place and the clamp did not leave any marks. I would encourage anyone who's on the fence about buying this product to try it out. It definitely was not a waste of money. Now I actually look forward to the next time that I get to make caramels!

Accurate And A Great Clip
I bought this to make toffee after throwing out 3 burned batches made with a mechanical thermometer. During the third batch it read 240 and the candy was smoking, so I knew this thing was junk for sure (Ok, I'm slow). Off to Amazon to see if I could find the one I used for 14 years before it just wouldn't wake up one day, even with new batteries. They have it! The reviews were so bad, one stating their good luck with the old one and no luck with the new one that I decided against it. Well, crap. So, here are the pros and cons of this one. It appears to be accurate; the toffee came out great. The clip on this thing is the best I have ever had: it holds the stem parallel to the side of the pan, near the side of the pan. Most stems stick out and get knocked about; not this one. The alarms were nice to have; one 2-3 degrees before the set temperature, then at the set temp it speeds up, letting you know you are there. Cons; you have to read it straight on. Crouching down got a bit old, thank goodness for the alarms. The head does not tilt, like my old one. This would made it MUCH easier to read.

Accurate temperature reads!
This thermometer is great. I used to have a manual thermometer and it was hard to read when my toffee was ready. This thermometer beeps at you when it gets close to temp so you know you’re almost ready. It’s a great thermometer as far as the read goes, the clip isn’t as sturdy as I would like and sometimes the thermometer falls off since it’s top heavy. There’s also no “on/off” button, it just turns off automatically after who knows how long. It is accurate and my toffee comes out perfectly every time using this thermometer. I recommend it, even if you only make things and need it occasionally.

Super durable
TLDR; really stands up to the test of time. I have had this thermometer for nearly five years. Originally purchased to make candy and caramels but it is now a staple in our kitchen. But here is the wildest test for it that I do not recommend. I was baking a large cut of meat. Set the thermometer to the desired temperature and inserted in to the meat. My kids came barreling in to the kitchen arguing so I shut the oven door for "just a second" to shoo them out. I obviously got distracted and resumed my other cooking. Twenty minutes later I hear beeping coming from the oven that the temperature has been reached. I fly to the oven to save the thermometer but the screen was completely black and not operational. I put the thermometer on the counter to return to after dinner and search the brand name to replace it. A couple of hours later I returned to find that the screen was back to normal! I have continued using it without issue! Would not recommend using the thermometer in the oven but keep hope if you accidentally do.

Purchased for yogurt making...
Purchased for making yogurt....I started looking at thermometers when my digital model did not survive a hot dunking, and then I accidentally purchased this one by hitting the 1 - click button. I did not cancel the order because I was almost positive I would be in need of a new one and I really liked some of the features of this one, and obviously, it doesn't matter if I am making candy or something else. I love and appreciate the fact you can set your goal temperature and an alert sounds when close to that temperature. This allowed me some freedom to move around in the kitchen, rather than hover over a pan of cooling milk to eyeball the current temperature. The clip is very welcome, but I mistrusted it somewhat and periodically I would push the thermometer down until the tip touched the bottom of the pan and then pull up slightly to assure myself it was positioned correctly. The clip does seem secure, but I did this several times anyhow. This is a great thermometer, arrived quickly, and would work with pretty much anything as long as the thermometer itself is not exposed to high heat. There is a heat shield, but I had a great deal of difficulty getting the probe to go through the opening, but will have to figure out a way if I need to use this for some reason. The probe is long enough for most deep pans. I believe it is accurate, but have no real way to verify this. If I were a candy maker, I would certainly test this out before having to use it for something critical....maybe bring a little syrup up to the soft ball stage to check.

Good luck with the screw for battery access
I just opened it, too late to send back. I can't even get the screw off the back. Is there even batteries anywhere or is that another expense for me? An expense IF I could get the screw out with my small precision screwdriver set. As far as my order, it's $24 DOWN THE TOILET.

Perfect for infant milk bottles
I am definitely not using this for its intended purpose, but I've tried several different thermometer options and this one has come closest to being perfect. When warming a bottle for a baby, I wanted 5 things, in order of importance: 1. Being able to set an alarm at a specific temperature 2. Constant updates so that you don't go over temperature 3. Being able to easily position the thermometer in the bottle while it is warming in a bottle warmer 4. Being able to easily clean 5. Being able to _remember_ the alarm, so that you don't need to reprogram every time you turn on the thermometer 6. being backlit so it can be easily read in the dark Most thermometers I've tried only meet some of this criteria, but this one has met all the requirements except the last. If this was back-lit, it would be perfect, but it would also probably drastically reduce the battery life. Also the alarm goes off 3 degrees or so before it actually meets temperature, but its easy enough to increase the target temperature to compensate. Of particular note: the heat shield makes it perfect for positioning the device over an open bottle!

Great product. No problems at all.
Did temperature test in boiling water. Temp set to 212. Warning went off as it should at 209 degrees. Mine does not screech loudly as another reviewer said and it flashes red light as it should. My sauce pan has a lip and the clamp held fast..no movement. Screen did not go black at this temperature (212). Haven't gone higher. Screen is small for those of us with not so good eye sight. I just turn this around so I can see the screen better. I think this works better in a little taller pan. TIP: If the probe slips in the holder just bend in the part underneath where the teeth are that holds the probe. It tightens it right back up. Then push the probe back in to the holder. Now it's nice and tight. Pulling the probe in and out when cooking/cleaning stretches the teeth part. Easy fix!!

Can't fault it, seems solidly build and the temperature presets make life easy
I wanted a digital thermometer to experiment with making confectionery, and this has ticked all my boxes. -Construction The thermometer seems sturdy, I have used it a couple of times now and it can definitely stand the heat. As the clip is not fixed to the thermometer, it clips comfortably to any sized pan, and the guard provided keeps any splashes away from the electronics. -Preset Temperatures The thermometer is preset with the temperatures you want for working with sugar, and you can scroll through these by just pressing one button ('mode'). This makes life easy, no programming required and you don't have to remember the temperature of the stages (soft ball, hard ball, etc.). It starts to beep as the set temperature is reached, so you can take your eye off the gauge safely without burning the sugar. -Conclusion If you are looking for a reliable, well priced candy/sugar thermometer, this comes highly recommended! It did take a while to get here from America though, and the tracking number provided didn't work. This wasn't a problem for me, and it came within the (generous) time window given, but if you need something urgently then this might be worth bearing in mind.
