If you feed squirrels (or even if you don’t) you know how totally destructive they are. We have to replace these frequently as they just eat them up, literally. First to go is plastic front. They either just tear it out or break it off and you take it off so they don’t get cut! We put 2 pieces of wood on the front to hold in food. Top one is gone. Now they can just reach in and get food. Other than that the box is very sturdy and will last until they eat the wooden lid to the point it doesn’t cover and food gets wet. Regardless of what they do, you will need to keep inside as clean as you can do food doesn’t spoil (assuming there is ever any left, which there rarely is ) I don’t know a better design, they eveneat through metal. This is at least nice and sturdy and as dry as possible until it will need to be replaced😏

So we got this yesterday and put it up 8:30pm. I pulled the staple out that was keeping the plastic glass in place so that we could drill it into the tree. We did put another staple in to hold the plastic glass in place. We did use longer screws. Between the peanuts and our really fat squirrels, I used longer screws! So you have to teach the squirrels how to open the lid. How i did this, and it took less then 15hours is... I filled the box with shelled peanuts and I took a half peanut shell and put it under both sides of the lid. Then I put two peanuts and set them on the ledge\shelf. I went out at 7am and the peanuts were gone but the lid had not been open. I put two more peanuts out and went back out at 11am and the peanuts were gone and the lid had been open cause the shells keeping the lid open were on the ground and some of the peanuts were gone from the box. Now, all I gotta do, is catch them in the act😜 The box doesn't have a finish on it, and living in Upstate NY, I'm thinking it may last for 3\4 years, but I'm okay with that, cause how can ya go wrong with the price! Enjoy. It's the stupid little things in life that put a smile on your face! And, btw, I might just get one for my front tree!😎

I bought this for perhaps the exact opposite reason most people do - the jays in our yard were taking the peanuts faster than the squirrels!The box works fine for this purpose. The jays can’t get into the box at all. It’s well constructed and the acrylic sheet doesn’t come out like in similar boxes so there’s little risk of the squirrels breaking that and cutting themselves. The box is also sturdy enough that the animals can’t move it, so we didn’t have to mount it with the screws.I take one star off because the lid is very heavy. Our squirrels weren’t able to lift it and grab nuts or seeds at the same time, even with the box filled to the top. We wedged an old wooden ruler under the lid to keep it propped up and that allows them to access the food (at any level) without risk of hurting themselves.

I bought it to sit on my deck because I’m to lazy to keep getting up to throw peanuts out when the chipmunks and blue jays just steal them all away. Super heavy duty, in fact I thought the lid might be too heavy until I just looked outside and saw a chipmunk get inside, get a nut and got back out. If you want a really nice quality feeder this is it. I saw a cheaper model at a local store and the quality was total junk, so happy I bought the right one.

I purchased this feeder for the purpose of entertainment for my cat as well as myself. I have to say that this has served its purpose but I do have some issues with the design. I am not sure if it is because I have a very crafty gray squirrel or if all squirrels are this smart. I have a gray squirrel who frequents the box and has found that he can prop food between the lid and the walls of the feeder to hold the lid up. Which really takes away from the purpose of the lid as well it takes away from the whole watching experience. I originally became used to the sound of the wood lid clunking down when a squirrel pulled food out. Which was not only a satisfying sound to hear but as well would let me know that some critter was in there enjoying the free food. The reason being is that those surfaces are flat and not angled. I will be taking this feeder to the workbench to fix this issue. My other gripe is that this feeder is not finished. For the money you would expect that the wood should be finished. Both things are easily fixed by me but my real question is why should I have to and why did the designers not think of this stuff first?

The media could not be loaded.  I purchased this after I noticed squirrels bending over backwards to get the food from the bird feeder. It has been so awesome! As soon as the squirrels showed up again, they figured it out right away and have been going through peanuts like crazy. I am going to have to start rationing. 😉 I did stain it myself to protect it somewhat from the elements, but it seems built very well. The plexi-glass is very sturdy--twice now I have found it on the ground in the morning after I think some crows tried to get into it, and it's still perfectly in tact. Watching the squirrels go in and out of the feeder has been pure joy and has yet to get old!

Plexiglass was broken by a squirrel the second day it was put up. Not that easy to secure to the tree. Had to use larger screws. I would not recommend it.

I bought this squirrel feeder and it was broke when I received it and cracked on the back. It was poorly put together.

My daughter has gotten into feeding squirrels this winter and was thrilled to receive this feeder. We weren’t sure how the squirrels would react; some people said the squirrels couldn’t figure out how to get the nuts and some chewed through the feeder. Happy to find out we have intelligent squirrels who caught on within a matter of minutes how to open the lid and help themselves! We love hearing the click of the lid every day, beckoning us to come to the window and watch the antics. If they run out of nuts, they come to a window and stare us down…you gotta love the entertainment…thanks for providing us with the perfect product!

Placed this on my back fence post and it works great. The squirrels figured it out in a day or two and seem to enjoy it. They chew on the lid in an attempt im guessing to get rid of the lid but thats not a minus on the item itself.I removed 1 star because the platform is small. The bottom part sticking out where the stand is very small for them and a few times i've seen the squirrels slip off it. A wider bottom would definitely give this a 5 star rating.

Squirrels knocked out the plexiglass almost as soon as it was mounted.

Our squirrel likes it, and it's been outside in the snow for a couple weeks now with no damage. Not sure why it's so expensive though...made with about $5 in materials...will just build the next one myself!
