Q: Why would i want to backup to tape when 1tb sata hd is 1/3 the cost of tape ?

So you can easily take your backup offsite in a cartridge. I don't like cloud services for this. I want full control of my backups and I want it to be portable. Keeping the backup onsite is dangerous in the event of a fire etc.

Yes, it is a removable hard drive not tape. You need an RDX drive to use this cartridge.
