Hawke Endurance ED 10x42 Monocular - Green

I bought this monocular for safari and absolutely love it! Superb optics, great quality and value, support a family-run world-leading British brand! Really great clear optics, good field of view, very smooth and easy to focus with one hand which is really important for quick changes of distance. Also for me, I wear glasses or prescription sunglasses so the really good eye relief was really important to me - they are perfect for quick spotting without needing to take glasses on and off, I have a perfect view, and the twist-up eye pieces work well for non-glasses wearers (if you let them have a go!). I found them brilliant for dawn and dusk game drives as well, good in low light too. The viewing compared very favourably with much more expensive nikon binocs. I much prefer a smaller lighter monocular to binocs, and am much more likely to carry it with me. I've had an 8x25 before, also useful and very small - but this 42 has so much better field of view and clarity! I've had a higher zoom monocular - 10-25x42, but it was basically useless, impossible to hold steady enough in the hand - and it, and other 8x25 binoculars, had such poor eye relief that I could not really use them at all, made me realise the eye relief is a vital thing for me to use it with my glasses - at least 15mm and preferably more (this one is perfect at 18mm) . This Hawke monocular is so good I might buy the 10x42 as well! But 8x is probably the best sweet spot for ease of spotting moving wildlife. For me, the supplied lanyard came apart on day 1, but I do not care at all - dropped the monoc on the ground and it is tough enough to be absolutely fine, and I wanted a different lanyard anyway. Made one with a ribbon! So I still give 5 stars, the monocular is outstanding value and quality and that is the important thing.

As other reviewers have said, this is a really solidly built monocular, with smooth focus and great optics. There have been a couple of comments about the lanyard: I'm guessing that the manufacturer must have replaced what they used to ship with something better because I've had no issues with it at all. I did manage to lose the dust cover for the objective lens the first time I took it out - something to possibly watch out for. It's relatively heavy (a reflection of the quality of the build materials), so I tend to carry it in a rucksack rather than a pocket. Overall, I'm thoroughly pleased with it: perfect for bird watching.

I find binoculars too heavy and a bit of a faff to use and carry around. The monocular fits in a pocket and can be used one handed making it something I take on all my walks. I have a smallish pair of £250 binoculars that have superior optics to this monocular but its the monocular that I carry everywhere. I wish I had paid more for a monocular with better optics. The optics of this monocular are good but if you are a serious wildlife watcher then you may want to pay more for clearer and brighter optics. Recommended. Pros Lighter and smaller than binoculars. Can fit in a large jacket pocket. Can be used one handed so easier to use than binoculars Both lens caps connected to the binocular so you cant lose them easily. Waterproof and sturdy. Feels good and comfortable to hold in a stable position. Smooth focusing. So much easier to carry around that I take them on all my walks. Not something I do with my binoculars. Good optics but limited in darker (dusk) conditions. This is not a fault of this Monocular but a limitation of the size. Cons Neck cord is a bit short and cheap.

Excellent quality monocular, comfortable to use & focus with one hand. 10x42 Images are sharp and clear and the viewing is steady. Well worth paying the little extra for the ED model.

Thought I would add a review for anyone thinking of buying a Hawke 10x42 monocular, I recently purchased the 10x42 Endurance ED version at £105. My intention was to leave it permantly mounted on a tripod for birding and viewing the sea and cliffs from my lounge window. I wanted something small and compact that could be left setup in situ, my telescope is a bit to large for this purpose and is used regularly on my daily walks so this seemed the ideal solution. The monocular arrived promptly and although poorly packaged (sent out in a jiffy envelope) it survived the postal service. It appeared well made light and compact and looked good for purpose. Unfortunately I then discovered that although it has a standard tripod mounting thread, it would not physically fit on the head of any one of my three tripods (Manfotto, Slick, Velbon) due to the poor positioning of the monoculars lanyard mounting point. As tripod mounting this monocular was my sole purpose I returned it for a refund. You could I suppose always change your tripod headstock for a ball and socket head, but that's an expense you would need to factor in before purchasing. However as a hand held monocular it was bright sharp and light, with a great close focus ideal for butterfly viewing. My only other comment would be that I compared another birders 10x42 Hawke Nature-Trek monocular, the non ED version at £79, there appeared to be no discernible difference between them in image quality even at the edges in low light. (It might be a case of the Emperor's New clothes) so if I was to ever purchase one of these, I would save myself the extra £26 and go for the non ED version with good optical quality but still unfortunately the same poorly designed tripod mounting point.

Images are clear and it’s easy to move following bird flight with the simple, light touch focus wheel. My first monocular and I’m very happy with it.

I got the Hawke 8x42 ED Endurance for Christmas & am very happy with it. Have been using a pair of Steiner Wildlife binos which have been great until my left eye became weaker than my right. This meant that focussing the binos properly became an issue. After quite a bit of research & reading countless reviews I settled on them Hawke 8x42. Used them for the first time today & I’m very impressed with my choice. Lighter & a bit smaller than I thought & the focus wheel at the top was very smooth indeed. The image quality is brilliant for what I need them for - general spotting on walks or when fishing. I’m no expert on optical equipment but, for me, this monocular ticks all the boxes for a tad over £100.

Great product - easy to use and adjust lens. Lightweight so easy to carry around. Great for bird watching.

I just got my new monocular. I am really happy with it. I felt bad that living in the desert, it'll never be as clean as when I unboxed it! Anyway, the lanyard is kinda cheap, and I couldn't figure out how to use the flat part of the lanyard through the flat slot in the monocular or the eyepiece cap. So, I used the thin cord part for that. Probably someday, the rubber (silicone?) will eventually tear). It wasn't 10 minutes before I lost the cap on the other lens cap. I figure that was probably inevitable. I was out with a friend who brought binocs and she was missing both her's, too. So given these minor issues, why do I give this 5 stars? Well, the image quality is great! Sure enough, that little protuberance with the focus wheel fits nicely in my hand (I have huge hands, FWIW). The image seems reasonably stable while scanning with the monocular. My purpose is to scan rock faces to look for petroglyphs. I can't recount how many times I've looked at far away rock faces and wondered it that's a natural 'peck' into the rock or a petroglyph too far away to resolve. I think this monocular will work great for me.

The Endurance ED 8x42 Monocular (Green) is an excellent compromise among a number of different features if, like me, you use it for quick acquisition and identification of wildlife, navigation aids and landscape features while moving through the landscape on foot or by paddling, such as when you are hiking and canoeing. No monocular is a substitute for high quality binoculars when watching wildlife over a prolonged period of time. On the other hand, no high quality binocular is so easy to carry on your belt and use quickly as a good quality monocular. I have owned and used four different monoculars during my trips in Midcoast Maine. These are the Stilnend 16x50, the Opticon Oregon 8x42, the Opticon Explorer WA ED-R and the Hawke Endurance 8x42 Green. Of these, I would say that the Hawke Endurance is the best overall for my purposes. The clarity is as good as the Opticon models, but the field of view is greater than the Opticon Oregon and is much easier to focus than the Opticon Explorer. The clarity of the Stilnend is not as good as either the Opticon or Hawke monoculars and I would not recommend it for that reason, if in fact it is still production. To make objective comparisons, I used all four models side by side with a Nikon Monarch 7 8x42 binocular. I was in the kitchen on a dark and cloudy day in January, identifying the clarity of bark, twigs, leaves and other objects in the backyard and the forest behind my house at distances of about 20 to 50 yards. The clarity of the Opticon models and the Hawke Endurance were about equal to each other but not quite as good as the Monarch. The Stilnend was distinctly less clear. The field of view is about equal in the Opticon Explorer, the Hawke Endurance ED and the Stilnend, but much less in the Opticon Oregon. I would say that for finding small birds in the brush and for identifying the species quickly the narrow field of view in the Opticon Oregon is simply inadequate. As a result of this test, I still think that the Hawke Endurance ED 8x42 Green is the best monocular overall in terms of the compromise between clarity, field of view, light weight and ease of use.

Optics are sharp edge to edge, field of view is good, Image is bright and the 8X magnification means you can move the monocular around without the image shaking too much. Strong enough to bring in the detail but not so strong you can't follow something that's moving. The focus knob is easy to use one handed and the eye cup easily adjusts between wearing glasses or not.
