Another Roadside Attraction: A Novel

Fab dark humor!
Robbins writes so well, it was difficult putting this fun & thought-provoking book down. He narrates an improbable, yet possible scenario of a small group made of 4 people, one being an infant, a babboon, live butterflies, and dead butterflies displayed, and a flea circus with fleas that have names and unique personalities. This novel made me laugh and really think about My life, not To take myself too seriously...I got a lot our great feelings and fun, reading "Another Roadside Attraction: A Novel" by Tom Robbins.

A good read for a rainy afternoon
Most of the book happens in Washington state, so rain helps. I read this book as a teen. It hasn't aged as well as I have, but it's still am entertaining read. Robbins's style may take a bit of getting used to, of this is your first encounter. I find Jitterbug Perfume to be a better first book for those who haven't met the author yet.The main premise of the book is The Second Coming. Yes. Of that guy. And it all happens at a Roadside Attraction Hot Dog Stand. The thing is, He is dead. Always has been. And the Vatican can't afford to have that leak. There's also a baboon. But most importantly, there's Amanda.

WARNING: NOT FOR SKIMMERS
When you really want to dive into a book for the nuance, the word choices, the descriptions, read any of Tom Robbins' books. If you're looking for a quick, escape read, find something else. Don't get me wrong, I love the snappy thrillers and adventure stories. But this isn't one of them. You'll just be disappointed and leave a bad review. But if you love cerebral analogies, humorous metaphors, and just plain crazy talk, this is for you. Take your time and savor.

A Fan of Tom Robbins Literature.
I read this book years ago, right after I read Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and loved it. Tom Robbins ability to weave together social and political issues into an incredibly humorous and thought provoking science fiction format ranks him as one of my favorite authors. I love his off the wall sense of humor that frequently illicits up front and out loud laughter when I am reading one of his boooks, With the exception of his last two books, I have read them all and it is difficult to qualify one of them as my favorite although Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Jitterbug Perfume and Skinny Legs and All come to mind as ones that I hated to see end. I purchased this copy of Another Roadside Attraction as a gift for my son and hope that he will enjoy it as muc as I did when I first read it. If not, I will read it again myself.

Oh, Tom
Oh, Tom. You really know how to turn us upside down and all around. And smack us with something just so outrageously, out there funny with a most deliciously crafted word pie...No question why this book put you on the literary map. There's nothing quite like a Tom Robbins read. And what's so amazing is that you take what seems to be a random, hallucinogenic morsel and tie it into a larger drama. It's just such good stuff. We'll never have another time in our history like the 70's, but Tom's books will preserve all the best that was the crazy of that era.

Amazing
Overall this story is a bit strange, if you decide to read it I would say do so with an open mind. There are so many small anecdotal parts in the book that make this story a must read. The story of Tarzan talking to Jesus is incredible. Through a fictitious scenario the author raises important philosophical points and a type of evolution of religion, in such a striking way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but like I said, definitely pursue this book with an open mind. I feel this book can have a powerful impact on a person's mind, and for me this book emphasized that truth is really in the way things are perceived.

Stellar Debut Novel
Ever yearned to visit America's Pacific Northwest? Then I highly recommend Tom Robbins' debut novel which does a fantastic job of conjuring the atmosphere and feel of Skagit Valley and its environs. Stunningly inventive language tinged with Robbins' signature style of psychedelic surrealism, his similes and metaphors are consistently mind-bending, exotic, erotic and witty. But, for me, there is also an aching, heartfelt quality to this writing which reveals Robbins' deep love for this particular landscape with its lush, dark forest greens and charmingly perpetual, drizzly rain. And, of course, MUSHROOMS! Plenty of mushrooms!By concentrating the story to one principal location with four main characters, this novel has a marvellously focused, almost theatrical edge, which helps Robbins build memorable characters with convincing back stories. There's beautifully organic development as Amanda and John Paul establish their new home by the highway, setting up their insect zoo and diner attracting charmingly goofy oddballs by the dozen. The novel's remarkable conclusion also lives up to the bracing subtitles: 'An Apocalyptic Entertainment!' and 'A Metaphysical Suspense!'For me, this astonishingly accomplished debut novel easily rates as highly as 'Skinny Legs & All' and 'Jitterbug Perfume'. Read Tom Robbins and feel the warm balloon of your brain jelly inflate to delicious, helium heights of happiness.
