An incredible device – if you know what you are buying
I have owned several eink devices at various sizes (Supernote, Kindle Scribe, various Boox devices) and I am blown away by the quality of the 300 ppi screen at 13.3", which was not available.Yes, there is ghosting, but it is nothing that a simple swipe won't solve, and it is near certain that Boox will continue to improve the ghosting. So we are clear, ghosting is an issue with all eink by default. While previous iterations of the 13.3 inch device had a backlight, it's a good thing in my book that this one does not because adding a back light decreases the fidelity of your handwriting. It's a tradeoff worth making. This is the opinion of the most thorough and popular reviewer on YouTube (My Deep Guide) and I concur. There is a reason he gushes over this device. If you want fantastic notetaking and crisp text, as well as the best PDF software I have ever seen, this is your device.

Great research machine!
I'm very happy with this tablet so far. I already had a Note Air 2 plus, tab mini c, max lumi 2, tab ultra c pro and a nova air 2.Text on the Note Max looks much crisper than on any of my other tablets. The screen is darker than the Note Air 2 plus, and maybe slightly darker than the max lumi 2, without any front lights on. It is definitely nowhere near as dark as either of my color tablets, though. That being said, I am missing the option to turn the front light on.I am a math graduate student, and primarily use this tablet to read academic papers and do the maths. Having a larger screen, and now being able to sync with my Zotero library, has made for a pleasant experience.

Great product if your use case aligns
The screen is huge, and the text for reading is very very crisp (it’s using latest display tech). Yes, there is ghosting, but it’s minimal, and if you’ve used other e-ink, this screen is no different. Don’t let the ghosting rumors cause you not to buy.In terms of speed, the UI is extremely snappy! I’m comparing it to my RMPP, and the box does circles around it. I’m sure the octa-core processor helps. The one tip you should know is the device feels like holding glass- it feels incredibly sensitive, and could easily brake. I highly recommend getting the warranty and a cover! In terms of quality (build), the device feels well made, and in my opinion fully functional and great value— you get a device that can do anything android can do!

Bad screen
The screen is much darker than shown in the picture. (The picture makes it look like the screen is about the same color as the white strip on the left edge. In reality it is about the same color as the gray border.) The screen also has very noticeable ghosting even in the better refresh mode (only two refresh modes!) and even after updating the firmware.)This might not be a complete dealbreaker if you really, really need the bigger screen, but for me, the tradeoff of ugly screen versus bigger screen does not actually make this tablet more pleasant to use than my old Note Air.

Big, White, and Underwhelming
I bought the Boox Note Max with a lot of excitement, but my first impression was a letdown. I already own a Kindle Scribe, so I was hoping for something along those lines, but instead, it just felt like a giant, overpriced white slate. The absence of a front light didn’t help matters either. I really wanted it to be a good fit, but in the end, I had no choice but to send it back

HUGE Beautifully Intriguing E-Ink Powerhouse w/ no backlight
I'm not sure why this product is getting review bombed. I'm enjoying mine. Voya just did a 1.5 hour in-depth review on YouTube and seemed to agree. I purchased the Remarkable Paper Pro, which was very nice, but was too bare boned for my needs. I liked the color screen and backlight, but now I have full access to the google play store, kindle books, OneNote, Bluetooth, split screen, TV streaming, and the list goes on. People are complaining about ghosting, but I don't find it that bad. New updates seem to be minimizing the issue. If you can't live without a backlight, just get a sleek inexpensive portable light. The writing feel is very good. Almost as good as the RMPP. There is a learning curve here, but I find it intriguing. Oh, the hardware is s3xy. P.S. Can't wait for my keyboard cover to get here :)

The screen is darker and there are ghosting issues
The device is well built. It feels sturdy and premium. I really wanted to keep this tablet. I had a Boox Max 3 before. This size was ideal for reading research papers and grading assignments. Unfortunately, aside from the high resolution, the tablet doesn't seem to bring other benefits of the Carta 1300 screen which is supposed to be whiter, more responsive and has better contrast ratio compared to the previous generations. The screen is simply darker on the Max Note, almost as dark as the reMarkable Paper Pro which has frontlight to compensate for it. Also, there was a ghosting issue no matter which refresh mode you select. I enabled A2 mode and used a bluetooth keyboard to do some typing. But the screen wasn't any more responsive than older Eink Carta models. The issues might be related to software. If Onyx is able to fix those issues in the future, I might come back to get one. For now, I'm returning it.
