Pretty thorough book
Carlon Colker put together a pretty good book here. First of all, the style of writing is excellent, in that it is one of the few training books which doesn't come across as trying to sell you something. Dr. Colker seems to know his stuff pretty well, and lays out his thoughts, his take on the science, etc, quite logically. This book isn't just someone who collated other work and put it together, there is stuff in here I haven't even heard of elsewhere. Whether it is true or not, however, I don't know. The reason this is a 4 star book and not a 5 (though I certainly recommend it) is actually two reasons. First, there is a lot of writing about "truth" and "science says", but not a lot of articles are explicitly called out. While I'm certain that Dr. Colker knows his stuff, it is nice to be able to read the sources some of this stuff comes from. Or if it doesn't, it is nice to know when it is simply "bro knowledge".Secondly, while I was pleased that Dr. Colker didn't feel that high carbs was either necessary or beneficial for bodybuilding (which is not part of the common view of things), I was disappointed in his take on fats. When discussing which fats are healthy, and which are not, he still placed saturated fats as unhealthy. I would have hoped that a doctor, at least, got past the "bro knowledge" of evil saturated fats and realized that there isn't a single study out there that shows causality between saturated fats and heart disease, obesity, whatever (though there are quite a few correlation studies). Irregardless, there were still some conventional wisdom snafus in there that bugged me a bit.But in short, this is an excellent book written for people who are no longer novices, but have been working out for a few years (regularly and carefully, not just goofing off in a gym) and want to take it to the next level.--Me

OK, but Dr.Willey's books are better
A decent book, and better than many, which are too basic. However, the nutritional advice from Dr. Warren Willey's books, especially "Better than Steroids" are much better, especially for the natural bodybuilder.

Excellent - thorough research, great reviews, humors narrative
Excellent read! Dr. Colker does an excellent job of bringing research to some of the basics of fitness and bodybuilding in an interesting and often humorous dialog. Great for anyone interested in this sport!
