A story of religious conflict
While this is fiction I believe that the author, himself an immigrant from Norway, does an excellent job of portraying what the lives would have been like for first generation Lutheran and Irish Catholics would have been when they attempted to live as a married couple when the pulls from their respective religious leaders could be so strong. I suspect it is close to reality, knowing the prejudices that surrounded me as I grew up half a century later, coming from similar roots. I very much did not like the way the book ended, but Iβm sure it is closer to reality, than my desire for a fairy tale world where families, even mixed families can learn to compromise and live in harmony rather than in conflict (a conflict seemingly fomented by their respective religious pastors/priests as well as brain washed family members.

Good for understanding of Norwegian immigrants
I purchased this book as the third in the trilogy to gain understanding about the Norwegian heritage of many living in the community where we are. It fulfilled that purpose.

Tells it like it is!
This would be banned in today's P.C. environment. While this reputedly describes the conflict arising from inter-faith marriage, it is actually an indictment of Roman Catholicism. Sorry to say , it is pretty accurately shows that the reasons for the birth of Protestantism still remain..

Giants in the Earth Concluded!
Giants in the Earth remains among my favorite novels, but I was unaware until recently it had two sequels and it took some looking to find them in sale in good condition for a reasonable price. Peder Victorious the second book and this one, Their Father's God are not quite as well written as Giants in the Earth or perhaps not translated as well, but they continue the story and are very much worth reading.

Both of these books were less inspiring than "Giants in the Earth". I suspect the fact that Rolvaag wrote them later in his life, actually closer to his death, had something to do with this!
