Made by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are a mystery. Some accounts date the birth of the guild in Athens in the second half of the 4th century BC. Supposedly, several minor philosophers grew tired of the endless Socratic dialogues endemic to their guild and engaged in making tools and toys for the home. (Hence the claim that Socrates drank his hemlock from a guild-designed chalice, though there is heated debate over the question of whether it was a chalice that "disappeared"). Others argue that the UPG dates back to the early Middle Ages, when the philosophers' guild entered the world of commerce selling obscene leaflets to pilgrims queuing for the bath. Business flourished until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned the publications. Not surprisingly, this led to increased sales, even if half of our members were burned at the stake. More recently, some revisionist historians have pointed to the birth of the guild at the time when it was still fashionable to live on New York's Lower East Side. Two brothers made necessity a virtue and to pay the rent, they dedicated themselves to satisfying people's need to have things like: finger puppets, warm slippers, cups of coffee... and laughing at things.

Fun card, can personalize messages
The card itself is of heavier-weight stock (meaning, thicker) than regular greeting cards so it should keep its shape better if the recipient should choose to place it on a bookshelf for display. A separate sheet of a variety of self-sticking greetings and Shakespeare quotes comes with it so you can personalize and tailor it to fit your recipient, your relationship and the occasion. I gave this as a birthday card to someone who is part of a Shakespeare reading group and they, together, have read out loud all of his plays at least three times. As a true aficionado, he really enjoyed it. Perfect!
