Fragile
Genius idea and worked great, but too fragile. By the end of the first bar of butter, it was already jumping treads... The plastic on acrylic treads is too fragile and gives in if you don't let the butter heat for 15 minutes outside the fridge and don't turn it very slowly.A more rugged construction would be perfect. I'd love to see the same design in metal.

Great idea, poor execution and poor functionality
I buy large blocks of Amish rolled butter that can be a bit unwieldy for everyday use, and we enjoy having spreadable butter at the ready. In the cooler times of the year, I keep butter in a butter bell on the counter so we can have spreadable butter; however, once the warm weather sets in, it goes rancid too quickly to leave out. I thought I would give this a try so that I could dispense butter in a form that would more quickly melt and be more easily spreadable. It did not work out. First, the thing is threaded so that as you twist it, the plunger screws the butter toward the grater. Unfortunately, the quality of the product causes it to strip. Like when you are turning it, it pops and the threads jump. Second, the grater end twists on in the wrong direction so when you are holding it to twist the butter up, it comes unscrewed and pops off. It would have been better if they had made this part reverse threaded. Finally, there's no good way to grip it. It is all smooth and round on the outside with nothing for gription (yes, I said gription), and inevitably in the process, you get a little butter on your hands, and it becomes slippery and impossible to turn. Maybe it would work better with ordinary butter, but it definitely did not work for my rolled butter. This one is headed to the donate bin. Maybe someone else will have better luck than I had with it.

Better Butter?
I tried to use this and put in a hard stick of cold butter but as i was turning the knob for the butter to come out it kept getting jammed up and pasty. There are better ones out than this one. Not worth it I threw it out in two days of using.

Broke after first usage
worked fine the first time we tried it. but very hard to clean. Since clearing took forever (not dishwasher save!), we put it back in the box waiting for a "special occasion" to use it again. re-opened the box after a few month after I bought it, saw a small crack on the side - from that painful cleaning process? from sitting in the box for too long? (no idea!).We put butter in, tried to use it and immediately a large piece on top broke off altogether.expensive gadget for 1-time-usage... Would not recommend buying it!!!

Poor quality
The threads strip out , even with refrigerated butter. Top comes off during use. I wish I could give it a half star.

Alas, not worth it
I thought it was a brillinat idea to but this kind of butter mill, as I don't like the taste of the butter that has been left out of the refrigerator after a few days. There are 2 problems with this:- you have to turn it a lot to get a small amount of butter. It's way easier to just use a knife on some butter that you keep out of the fridge.- The plastic broke after a few usagesThis will probably end in the garbage in a few days.

Clever idea.
Fantastic little gadget. At first I did wonder, seemed flimsy and took a few minutes to fathom out, although there are diagrams if I had bothered to look. The photo shown has it upside down. The ridged part is what you hold and turn which pushes the butter downwards and out through the grating. Very fine butter threads come out, I tried it with a section of a block of butter. It then sits in the fridge with the lid resting on the top. Not a necessity in the kitchen obviously but I like the idea.
