Writing & Grammar 7 for Christian Schools Paperback – January 1, 2011

Average Grammar Book:The book is set up with chapters that focus on one aspect of grammar at a time with little review once a chapter is finished. This is pretty typical, but was not very effective for us. My daughter used Bob Jones from 1 - 4 grade and never remembered her parts of speech. It was very frustrating. But it is not unusual for grammar curricula. For a much better grammar teacher, check out Shurley English, which teaches with chants and repetition. It uses a spiral learning technique, which means that it introduces small sections of new material while they are reviewing previous lessons. The new material is introduced in such small chunks that it seems very easy. Shurley is fairly intensive for the parent, but incredibly effect.Great Writing Program:What BJU excels at is its writing instruction. As a professional writing instructor, it was abundantly important to me to find good curriculum for my children, whom I homeschool. After looking at many popular curricula, I quickly realized why so many people grow up hating to write. Most books do not sufficiently teach it.There are 2 main things that I like about BJU's writing assingments.The first one is that they show students various ways to approach writing. The assignments vary in the pre-writing techniques that they require, which helps students find thinking methods that work for them. Some programs (including Shurley and IEW) lay out a one-size-fits-not-many-people approach, and the result is that many students come away thinking that writing is both boring and not for them.The other aspect of BJU's writing that I like so much is that the assignments give details about what to include in a paper. Many students are concerned about whether their papers will be "what the teacher is looking for," which is a valid point. After all, the teacher will be the one giving feedback as to whether a student communicated his or her point well. If the teacher isn't pleased, the student will receive negative feedback that can be frustrating to understand. The clearer the assignment is, the easier it is for developing writers to approach. It also helps the teacher focus on grading specific aspects that the assignment is addressing, so feedback will be more effective and the student can integrate it it more easily since he or she have a well-defined reference point to work from.

This is a good book, with a solid grammar foundation for middle school students. Explanations in the text go well with the lesson. I use this with a teacher's manual

Much better price than local Book store

The media could not be loaded.  I had no idea of the degree to which the book was used. Granted, it was noted that the book was used, however, I did not expect the majority of the pages to be written in and consumed.I was prepared for creases, erasure marks, and minimal writing, not something used to such a great degree.

This book came promptly and in great shape. We were able to start our school year in a timely matter.
