Wow!
My sister gave me a tube after hearing about it on a NYC radio show. She really didn't know what to do with it so she gave it to me. I use it to rub on steaks before grilling them and it gives them a certain magic taste that you just can't putyour finger on. The package has a website where you can go and see a video of different ideas about using the product. Recipes at: [...]Be brave, try it you will like it. Just don't use it as ketchup.By the way I went to the website and umami paste does not contain MSG as onereviewer stated. That's a good thing.Back again......Didn't realize it had an expiration date! I received my last threetube shipment in January and I am on its last legs. I am still here and happily using it after the date. Do you think the ancient romans worried about e4xpirationdates as all of the above ingredients occured in their cooking. I just ordered the far eastumami and can't wait to give it a trial run with all my stir fries etc. that do notlive up to my liking and I hope this will do the trick.

LOVE this unique product!
I had read an article in a food magazine about this product and the only place I could find it was on Amazon.com. I had to wait a while to get it, but I'm really happy I searched it out.Its a very unique (in a good way) taste. A slight undertone of olives, kind of earthy, a bit salty, a subtle tomato-y taste...all wrapped into one.At first, I was a little intimidated to put it into a dish, but I just started to experiment. I have added it to finished rice, stir fry, risotto, homemade soups and pasta sauces.WHen you taste it directly from the tube, it has a distinctive taste, but when its added to a dish, you don't notice that exact taste. Instead, it seems to simply "enhance" the flavors that are already in your prepared dish. Not sure if I'm explaining this very well, but it does add a subtle "brightness" to your dishes. I'm really happy with it and I look forward to finding new ways to utilize it.A little really does go a long way, so don't let the price + shipping scare you off.

Delish, a truly unique taste
I am in love with this product. You could make your own at home by using some earthy mushroom soaking water, tomato paste, sun-dried tomato oil, anchovy paste, kalamata olives and Parmesan cheese but why bother? Just buy this! I use it in EVERYTHING. I use it in my sun-dried tomato tuna salad (OMG is it ever good), in tomato sauce, with sautes, cheese and salami, as a condiment on a burger (so good) anywhere a savory kick is called for.You definitely have to like the strong flavors of the ingredients involved. This is not for someone who is fussy about mushrooms or olives or thinks they can taste anchovies (you can't, trust me, I don't like them and I cannot taste them in this except for a slight briny quality). This product is for someone who really enjoys zipping up the flavor of their food. I highly recommend it. I will always have it on hand in my kitchen.

enhances so many dishes from clams linquine, to soups to mediterranean chicken, to pizza sauce
used it last week in a pot of soup and clams linguine. Week before with spagetti and mediterrean chicken& homemade pizza sauce. Can be subtle or can make it a stronger flavor but always interesting & enlivening.

Yuck!
I bought this for my husband and fortunately, he likes it. But, I think it is nasty tasting, which perhaps isn't surprising given the ingredients include 2 things I REALLY don't like: olives and anchovies (I don't like any fish!). So, to me the thing tasted far too fishy and too olive-y. If you like olives and fish, perhaps you wouldn't mind this at all.Perhaps my expectations were too high. I thought that this stuff would open our eyes to the umami taste in a whole new way. And my understanding was that the umami taste was supposed to be more earthy and sort of mushroom-y, not fishy. I was disappointed.

Must Have
Adds depth of flavour. Tomato based + anchovy, but not over powering. A staple in my kitchen.

mildly interesting
From what I read, I thought it would be something special. It's just another condiment --- not worth the money.
