Q: How well does this game play with 2 people?

My wife and I enjoy the two player game very much. It's a head to head duel, always tense and exciting. With 4, the game felt too chaotic. It was difficult to plan ahead, as the board changed a lot between turns. We haven't played 3 player yet. Also because I'm colorblind, having only 2 contrasting colors on the board made it easier for me to play, rather than having 4 colors to keep track of.

Q: This looks similar to Catan. Is it different enough to be worth the purchase?

They are completely different types of games. Catan is a trading game. Blue Lagoon is about collecting items and controlling territory. Go to BoardGameGeek (it's free) and read some of the reviews for each of those games which explain the basics. I personally think Catan is a bit boring. I found Blue Lagoon very exciting.
