Thelma Todd & Zasu Pitts: The Hal Roach Collection 1931-33

Essential for anyone interested in Thelma Todd. These shorts, where she is teamed with Zasu Pitts, seem to be better than that series that followed. There are four individuals providing bonus audio commentary tracks. They are uniformly horrible. They talk non-stop, which would not be a problem if they had something of interest to say relative to Thelma Todd, the shorts, or something related. Most of what they do is provide lengthy, detailed resumes (not even bios) of the horrible supporting players--over and over again. Even if you are interested, it wears on you to the point of turning the commentary track off.

It's wonderful to see all the recent attention being given to beautiful and talented 1930s comedienne Thelma Todd, with long overdue DVD releases of the films she made while under contract for the Hal Roach Studio. Thanks to the preservation work by the folks at Classic Flix (Thelma Todd/Patsy Kelly Comedy Collection) and Sprocket Vault (Charley Chase at Hal Roach Vol.1), a new generation of fans can appreciate this charming and vivacious personality who left us much too soon.Sprocket Vault's latest Thelma Todd offering is the complete set of 17 two-reel comedies she made co-starring silent screen veteran ZaSu Pitts between 1931-33. Produced during the free-spirited pre-Code era, these films helped Americans laugh off the Depression if only for a few hours spent in a darkened movie theater. We're fortunate these comedic gems appear in such overall excellent condition, having been transferred from the original 35mm nitrate negatives. Truly, they never looked nor sounded this good since their original release, and collectors will be overjoyed with the quality.Inevitably, some shorts are funnier than others with a few relying perhaps a bit too much on slapstick, but Thelma and ZaSu are so natural together (the two were close friends off-screen) and the nostalgic charm is so irresistible, that any shortcomings are easily forgiven. Sometimes (much to the delight of male viewers) the humor calls for Thelma to display a considerable amount of sex appeal by appearing in scanty lingerie.Among the best of the lot are CATCH AS CATCH CAN, SHOW BUSINESS (which was the model for the Three Stooges' A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN), ALUM AND EVE, THE SOILERS, ASLEEP IN THE FEET, and ON THE LOOSE. The latter is a delightful comedy in which the girls get their fill of Coney Island only to have Laurel and Hardy (in a funny concluding cameo) ask them for a date to - you guessed it - Coney Island.Extras include informative commentaries by Richard Roberts, Randy Skretvedt, Brent Walker and Robert Farr, also a stills and poster gallery.As a fan of Thelma Todd and classic film comedy in general, I give this great collection my highest recommendation.

Got my copy today and the DVD authoring of the image and aspect ratio is wrong.Look, I like the material and I'm glad it is being released. It's just unfortunate to take all this time and effort to end up doing it wrong. The short films on the DVDs are encoded as anamorphic widescreen for no good reason. They are pillar-boxed, ie they have vertical black bars encoded into the sides of the picture. Maybe this was to make the image fit modern widescreen TVs, even though it is completely unnecessary. Widescreen TVs and DVD players know how to correctly display 4:3 or academy ratio content already without pillar boxes encoded into the picture. The image is not distorted, and nobody probably will even notice the issue on their widescreen TVs. That doesn't change the fact that it's wrong. The net effect is that about 25% of the available pixels are wasted on unneeded black pillar boxes along the sides. The trade-off is maybe that the available bitrate has less image to encode, so it may do a slightly better job of encoding the image information it does have, even though it is lower resolution image than it should be. Overall the difference may be a wash, but the image has a very slight softness to it (for a DVD) that might not otherwise be there. I wouldn't let this keep you from buying it, but it's just frustrating and annoys me. The presentation still looks pretty good and is watchable. But with all the bragging about using original elements this should have really been a Blu-ray release anyway, where widescreen encoding with pillar boxes for 4:3 content is common and there is resolution to spare. On DVD this widescreen approach for old standard A/R content is just incompetent and unfortunate. The recent ClassicFlix DVD release of the Todd and Kelly shorts managed to do it correctly at least.

I went into this collection completely blind, meaning I had never seen any of these comedy shorts before. I was familiar with both Thelma Todd's work and Zasu Pitt's, but I had never seen them interact onscreen together. This collection of shorts was an absolute delight and now that I've watched all of them, I compare Todd and Pitts to The Three Stooges. If you're looking for zany, physical comedy and are in the mood to laugh, this is the perfect DVD collection for you!Last night I ordered the Thelma Todd & Patsy Kelly DVD collection in the hopes that it'll be just as good as the Todd & Pitts one. I'm really looking forward to watching this new collection!

1892年生まれの青年ハル・ローチは、様々な職を転々とした後、1910年代にハリウッドに辿り着き、草創期だった映画界に飛び込んでコメディのエキストラとして働き始めた。そこで、ハロルド・ロイドと出会って、自身のハル・ローチ・スタジオを興して製作側に回り、ロイドを主演としたコメディを作り、評判を得る。それ以降、ハル・ローチ・スタジオは、コメディに特化した会社として業界で広く認知されることになり、ローレル=ハーディやちびっこギャングなどの人気コンビやスターたちを生み出したことは説明するまでもないだろう。それに気を良くしたローチは、1931年に、今度は、女性のコメディ・コンビを考案する。サイレント期からのベテランのコメディエンヌであるザス・ピッツと新人女優のセルマ・トッドがそのコンビ。おっとりとしたピッツとサバサバとして活発なトッドという対照的な二人が―視覚的にもピッツがブルネットで、トッドがブロンドという差異がある―、ローチ作品ならではのスラップスティック的状況に追い込まれる短編シリーズとして、1931年～1933年の間に17本が製作された。本DVDセットは、”Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts: The Hal Roach Comedies 1931-33”と題して、そのピッツ＝トッド・コンビの短編全17本を2枚のディスクに収めたもの。セールスの掴みとして、セルマ・トッドの名前が先に来ているが、実際のクレジットは、ピッツの名前の方が先に出る。ディスク構成は以下の通り。【Disc1】:●”Let’s Do Things”デパートの音楽店で働くセルマ(セルマ・トッド)とザス(ザス・ピッツ)。ザスの恋人ミルトン(ジョージ・バイロン)の知り合いの医師マンディ(ジェリー・マンディ)がやって来るというので、二人は、ダブル・デートを思いつく。しかし、やって来たマンディはかなりの変人で、セルマはがっかり。ザスの顔を立てるため、しぶしぶナイト・クラブでのダブル・デートに臨むセルマだったが…。●”Catch-As Catch-Can”エンパイア・ホテルの電話交換手として働くセルマとザスが忙しく回線をさばいている。一方、同じホテルの一室では、レスラーのマネージャー、ハリー(リード・ハウズ)が、ホームシックで故郷に帰りたがるサリヴァン選手(グイン・ウィリアムズ)をその晩の試合に出させるべく説得していた。我慢ならずに、故郷へ電話をかけようとしたサリヴァンは、交換手のザスに一目惚れしてしまい…。●”The Pajama Party”ラジオ局で働くセルマとザスは、恋人たちと落ち合うために、田舎道を車で走っていた。ところが、そこへ、横から車が進入。間一髪で避けたセルマとザスを乗せた車は、湖に落ちてしまう。それを見た相手のヴァンダイク夫人(エリザベス・フォレスター)は、セルマとザスに謝罪し、お詫びの印に二人を自宅に招くのだが…。●”War Mamas”第一次大戦下、志願兵として、フランス戦線で男性兵士たちをサポートするセルマとザス。失敗ばかりして、いつも女性上官に怒られている二人は、ある日、任務を言い渡される。ところが、夜道を車で行く二人は、誤って反対方向に進んでしまい、ドイツ軍陣地に迷い込んでしまう…。●”On the Loose”夜中の12時を過ぎ、セルマとザスは、コニー・アイランドのデートを終えてクタクタになって帰ってくる。いつもお決まりのコニー・アイランドでのデートはもうたくさんと言って、二人は床につく。翌日、街を歩いていた二人は、通りかかった車が跳ね上げた泥水をかぶってしまう。運転していたイギリス人は、お詫びの印として、二人に服を新調しデートに誘うのだが…。●”Sealskins”新聞社のタイピストとして働くセルマは、いつか記者になる夢を持っている。ちょうどその頃、シベリアの皇室の紋章(seal)が盗まれたとの記事が紙面を賑わせ、セルマは興味深々。そこへ、新聞社に、シベリアのアザラシ(seal)を盗んだという電話が入る。新聞記事に載っている”seal”のことだと勘違いしたセルマは、特ダネとばかりに電話の住所を突き止め、ザスと現場に急行するのだが…。●”Red Noses”セルマとザスが、風邪を引いて寝込んでるところに、会社のボスから電話がかかってくる。一刻も早く体調を良くし、仕事に戻って来て欲しいという内容。ボスは、二人に、トルコ式健康施術を受けて、風邪を治すように命じる。早速、珍妙な施術の数々を受ける二人だったが…。●”Strictly Unreliable”舞台女優のセルマは、舞台での役を掴むものの、家賃滞納で、鬼のような大家のホーキンス夫人(シャーロット・メノ)から下宿を追い出されてしまう。部屋にある衣装がなくては、舞台に出演出来ないセルマは、下宿の掃除婦のザスに衣装を取って来てくれるよう頼むのだが…。【Disc2】:●”The Old Bull”セルマとザスが田舎道をドライブしている。ザスの危なっかしい運転が原因で、車は農家の納屋に突っ込んでしまう。農夫にどやしつけられた二人は、車を納屋に残したまま逃げ出す。何とか、車を取り戻そうとする二人だったが、ちょうどその頃、サーカスからライオンが逃げ出したという無線ニュースが入り…。●”Show Business”歌う猿を使う芸人コンビのセルマとザス。仕事がなく、日々の食事にも事欠くある日、エージェントから、久しぶりに仕事の連絡が入る。急いで身支度をした二人は、指定された列車に乗り込むのだが…。●”Alum and Eve”セルマとザスが、スピードを出してドライブしていると、それを見ていたパトロール警官に静止させられる。スピード違反を咎められたセルマは、咄嗟に、ザスが急病人で、病院へ急いでいるという噓をついてしまう。それを知った警官は、善意で二人を病院へ連れて行くのだが…。●”The Soilers”セルマとザスは、学費を稼ぐために、学業のかたわら雑誌購読の営業をしている大学生。しかし、訪問先で断られ続け悪戦苦闘中。そこで、今度は、場所をビジネス・ビルに移して、色仕掛けで営業を開始するのだが…。●”Sneak Easily”妻を爆弾で殺害した事件の容疑者であるオースティン教授(ボビー・バーンズ)の公判が始まる。弁護人のセルマは、証拠品である爆弾を提出するが、陪審員のザスが誤って、それを飲み込んでしまったから大変！爆弾は、10分後に爆発し、その威力は、街全体を消滅させるほどのものということで法廷は大混乱に陥る…。●”Asleep in the Feet”一日デパートで働き、くたくたになってアパートに帰って来たセルマとザス。隣の住人が、翌日までに家賃の20ドルを支払わないと追い出されるということを聞き、何とか20ドルを稼ぐ術を考える。二人は、男性相手のダンサーとして稼ぐことを思いつくのだが…。●”Maids a la Mode”ブティックで、お針子として働くザスとモデルのセルマは、顧客の前で披露するファッション・ショーでヘマをしでかし、クビになってしまう。しかし、店のボスは、二人を哀れに思い、クビを撤回し、顧客から受注した服を夜中までに届けるように指示するのだが…。●”The Bargain of the Century”セルマとザスは、猛スピードで車を走らせてバーゲン・セールへと向かう途中、オートバイ警官バターワース(ジェームズ・バーティス)に制止させられる。ザスは、自分が警部の娘であると噓をつき、彼をバーゲンにつきあわせるのだが…。●”One Track Minds”セルマは、女優になるためのスクリーン・テストを受けることになり、ザスと彼女の小さな弟スパンキー(ジョージ・”スパンキー”・マクファーランド)と一緒に、列車でハリウッドへと向かっている。そこに、著名な映画監督や蜂箱を持った男性などが乗り込んできて、車内は大混乱となる…。ローチの思惑にもかかわらず、ピッツとトッドのコンビは、それぞれの個性が相乗効果を見せることもなく、必ずしも息が合っているとは言えず、名コンビとはならなかったようだ。ただ、それでも、シリアスな役も出来るピッツと”Bombshell”(セクシーな女性)のトッドが、体を張ってスラップスティックを演じてみせる姿は、やはり楽しいし、可笑しい。本DVDセットは、隠れたクラシック作品を出来うる限り良質の素材を使ってBlu-ray、DVDとして発売する米Kit Parker FilmsのThe Sprocket Vaultレーベルから発売されたもの。35mmオリジナル・ネガをフィルム・スキャン、レストアしてマスターを作ったようで、もちろん、細かいパラやキズなどは残っているものの、白黒諧調も悪くなく(作品によっては、褒められないものもあるが)、ディテール表現も比較的精細で、製作年を考えれば、十分すぎるほどの画質と言えるだろう。音声も、もちろんノイズが残ったりしているのだが、セリフが聞き取れないというようなこともない。英語字幕も収録。特典には、リチャード・M・ロバーツ、ランディ・スクレトヴェット、ブレント・ウォーカー、ロバート・ファーによるコメンタリーと宣材写真やポスターを集めたものが収録。本DVDは、北米盤ながら、リージョンAll仕様なので、日本製のリージョン2 プレーヤーで問題なく視聴可能だ。

Anyone who relishes Hal Roach comedies will savour the films on this DVD. Personally, I'm grateful that care was taken to bring these classic 'shorts' up to technological standards that modern audiences expect. I must also say that it's a shame that the stunningly beautiful and incredibly talented Thelma Todd died under mysterious circumstances in December, 1935, at the tender age of 29. She had so much to offer! Perhaps her other films can be salvaged from the deterioration of time, and put on DVD for the benefit of modern audiences. Here's hoping!

what a great comedy team! Sprocket vault has done it again with this wonderful collection of comedy shorts from Hal Roach, very good quality for old film, great fun to watch, I am happy they are finally available for Canada and U.S.A viewing

We need more from the Hal Roach Studios. Excellent picture and sound quality. Very funny comedies.
