I accidentally abused the absolute hell out of this and it still works fine. In my Endeavour 40 sailboat with a Perkins 4-108, I had a starter burn up from staying engaged while the motor was running until it got smoking hot and melted down. I replaced it with this starter and also replaced the solenoid. It happened again as apparently it was the start button shorting out inside. So this one ran about 5 minutes without disengaging while the motor was running but I was watching so killed the 12 power when I started smelling it getting hot in the engine room. I replaced the button, and solenoid again, and this starter still works perfectly. I bought another one for a spare because it got really hot and I am surprised it still works at all. It must be very rugged.

I installed this starter on my sailboat's Perkins 4-108 without ant issues with fit. I found this starter to be slightly lighter than the original (from 1980) but with increased torque and reliability.

Shipped and received promptly. Interestingly, the mounting flange on the new starter was not as thick as the original starter due to a difference in the configuration of the solenoid bracket/housing. I could have used shorter mounting bolts but didn't realize the difference until the new starter was in place. So far (about a dozen starts), the new starter is performing flawlessly on my 1985 Perkins 4.108.

This product came quickly and fit and starts my 1985 perkins 4-108 marine diesel engine. One commenter had mentioned the flange was smaller and that he could have used smaller bolts and it threw me off... There was a spacer between the old starter and the engine that stayed attached to the old starter when i took it off. When i hooked it up without the spacer the gear in the starter didn’t have room to disengage and i thought i had gotten a lemon i did some research about changing the starter on a perkins online and read about some one with a similar issue and the spacer and banged it off the old starter with a couple light taps and fitted it to the new starter and it worked perfectly so maybe check for this spacer if your bolts seem to grow... nice to be able to get parts online in less than a week like this

Drop in replacement for my Perkins 4-108. Looks like a good quality unit. Took a peak inside and found no issues. Strong motor for good starting performance. Also came with a print out of of it's quality testing certificate.

It wasn’t fun removing and replacing the starter in tight quarters but the replacement starter fit perfectly and had no problem turning the engine over. The unit was also packaged well and actually delivered ahead of time. I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a good 4.108 replacement.
