Not a story for children but one for thinking adults
And excellent graphic novel about painful and sometime horrific treatment of women and girls. I bought this to give to my nearly-seven-year-old niece, but there was no way I could explain this story to a child of her age. An older child would require considerable context and even that would be painful.

Powerful story
Eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in Kabul. Her father was once a history teacher in this capital city of Afghanistan but the building was bombed and he is sick so he now makes money for the family from a blanket in the marketplace. Parvana accompanies her father to the market where he sells miscellaneous items and he reads letters for people who cannot read or write. As they sit there together, they talk and tell stories and her father yells to the patrons, “Anything written, anything read, Pashto and Dari. Beautiful items for sale.” I thought the time that these two spent alone together was priceless. I could still hear her father calling out to the people long after I had finished reading this novel, the words had created a poetic rhythm within me.Then it happened, they came and arrested her father. Now, the there was no one to provide income for their family. Hearing the news, Parvana takes matters into her own hands and transforms herself into a boy so she can be the breadwinner. This is just one of the many instances where we see Parvana’s determination shine through.I enjoyed how this graphic novel can tell this story so quickly and with such powerful emotions. Using captivating illustrations inside a wide variety of text box sizes this story is wonderful. I liked the short sentences that were used and how many times some of the text boxes had no sentences at all.

Poignant story of a family and their bravery in Kabul under the Taliban rule
This is a beautifully illustrated book about a young girl called Parvana and her brave journey to save her family during the Taliban rule. She draws strength from the fictitious story she weaves for her little brother. It is extremely poignant and wonderful for young readers. I bought this for my seven year old to help her understand the current struggles of the Afghan people. We loved the book and then went onto watch the movie. I highly recommend it.

Follows the film
This graphic novel follows the plot of the film of the same name. It has differences with the original book. I used it as a supplementary book for students who needed extra support in my ELA class.

A lovely book for a young reader
I can't fault this for what it sets out to do. It's a really lovely book and good value, even if a slim volume. The artwork is splendid, truly, and the story, though very concise, even a little "bitty" as another reviewer has pointed out, is still coherent and complete. As an English teacher, I've come to appreciate the usefulness of "graphic" novels for some students and, for learners of English especially, they reign supreme.

Some parts are not same as the novel itself
My daughter said it’s different from the novel especially the later chapters. But it’s still a good educational comic book. We don’t live in an ideal world, and the kids should know that.
