Will this only crack the upper shell off, I want to peel the lower shell off myself without any cut marks at the middle of my hard boil egg!

This is not for peeling eggs. It is used for eating soft boiled eggs in a cup. You use this to get an even crack around the top of the egg so you can easily spoon the egg out of the shell. It has nothing to do with peeling eggs.

Do you need some sort of holder to use this with? Photo looks like the egg is in a white holder

Yes. A set of 4 nice white porcelain holders can be purchased on Amazon. Works great, Usually one drop will crack the egg. My wife usually drops the weight twice. Also, you can purchase set of small spoons used to eat the egg. Very cool.

Can I peel the whole egg easily without damaging the white?

This tool doesn’t peel the egg. You put a soft boiled egg in an egg cup, place the dome atop the egg, slide the ball up the pole and drop the ball. When it drops it cleanly cuts the shell in a circle. As you tip the dome off the top of the egg, a small part of the top of the egg comes off (like you sliced it off with a knife) so that you have a flat top on the egg allowing you to use a spoon and eat the egg out of the shell. Amazing gadget really.

It looks like there are many choices in this design. Is this one really better than the $10.00 & less versions?

YES! I bought mine 25 years ago in Germany. Still looks like new and works great. We don’t eat our soft boiled eggs without it. It has a nice weight to it and is well made. After over 20 years the top recently popped off. So I glued it back on. And it’s like new again. Highly recommend it. Actually buying some for my young adult kids as stocking stuffer.
