You need 3 AA batteries for starters and different animal sounds are pretty good. I couldn't find any instructions but it's pretty straightforward the only thing I can't figure out is when my Grandson is playing with it the dog normally makes a barking noise but every once and a while it makes a donkey sound. I don't know if he's hitting the right combination of keys or what, but it's happened a few times. The volume control is nice it get quite enough that it's not hard to here and it gets louder but still not too loud. This is a neat little musical toy for him
