Do you still need to tape the joint before spackling if you are using these clips?

Yes, you will still need to apply tape and mud. These are in essence a simple backing method to attach the piece of drywall. These are great for smaller patches. You don't need to cut the drywall back to a stud. I have used these clips many times. Definitely worth the money! Glen

Do they make 5/8 clips

Yes. They sell a 5/8 specific clip on their website, but a 1/2” clip works on 5/8” board. Just bend the clips out a bit at install. The clips break off below surface after screws installed. I’ve ordered from Amazon and their site. Both ship quick.
