I ended up buying the 2022 version because this new format is useless. Review: I picked up the Lonely Planet Japan guide expecting a standard travel overview, but I was genuinely surprised by the sheer volume of content packed into this book. What initially seemed like it might be a surface-level tourist guide turned out to be an incredibly thorough resource that goes far beyond the typical highlights. For anyone planning a trip to Japan, don’t underestimate how much valuable information this guide contains. It’s dense with content in the best possible way – you’ll find yourself discovering new places and experiences you hadn’t even considered. Well worth the investment for both first-time visitors and return travelers looking to explore beyond the beaten path.

We just returned a few hours ago from a three-week trip to Japan--our first. We concentrated on the sites of Honshu (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Miyajima, Koya-san, Takayama, Kanazawa and more). As a loyal Lonely Planet reader, I was hesitant to purchase this latest edition before our departure, given the negative comments about the new format and its lack of solid information, etc. I'm here to say that this guidebook was GREAT--and was there for us every step of the way on our travels throughout the country. I understand why the people at LP have decided to dispense with opening and closing times and other such detailed info.--because in this day and age, who'd depend 100% on what a guidebook tells you about opening and closing times? I wouldn't--and didn't. With my Japanese Pocket wifi (rented in advance and picked up at the airport upon arrival) and my smartphone, I was always able to plan ahead by consulting a site's website (all available with English language option). LP has taken into consideration a modern-day traveler's needs and curiosity, as well as one's own speedy access to information, and come up with an intelligent, handy, and informative guide. Thank you!
