Plaid Phonics, Level K Paperback – Student Edition, January 1, 2010

I homeschool my children. I used this book with my older child at age 4, she gained strong phonetic awareness and developed into a very confident reader and writer. I'm now using this book with my younger child, age 4, and am reminded of how good this book was!It's got so many pages you get your money's worth - we didn't finish it all in one homeschool year, we finished it the following year and moved on to the next level B book in the series. I always recommend this book. Some children age 4 will be ready for this, but I teach phonics in our homeschool co-op and can say for some children, age 5 or even 6 will be a better fit. But it's a great way to teach a child to read, in my opinion.

I love this book. It is well organized and easy to use. I was using a different phonics book with my first grader. She hated it and it was a struggle to get her to do the lessons. After we had an accident with that one and it was ruined, I looked for a replacement that she might enjoy more. This one is it. The lessons are engaging and fun for her. She loves it and actually asks me if she work on her phonics book.

This book is currently used in my child's school. It is an excellent book with well thought out activities and lesson plans. My daughter enjoys doing the assignments and is able to complete many on her own. It encourages logical thinking and presents material in multiple ways to aid those who learn both visually and by repetition or auditory pathways. My only concern is that it is rater as a first grade text and I feel it is really more of a middle/late kindergarten level book. I used the text for several weeks and then ordered the next level.

There is no way reading can be reasonably taught without phonics. This 'plaid' series (A to F) is outstanding and I have been using it with students in various grade levels for years.
