Abby Invents Unbreakable Crayons

I love STEM books and am always looking for those that share about the processes related like problem-solving, research and trying again and again. The illustrations make Abby come to life, like she could be a student anywhere. A great book to get kids learning about inventing — including starting a convo on what a patent is!

My son did not want to stop reading this book and wanted me to get him Abby's unbreakable crayons :). I told him to make his own LOL. As I adult I had fun reading this inspiring story. This is a great book to inspire your little ones to solve problems and realize that they can create things, and failing is OK and just part of the process.. Looking forward to more from this author...

This book has a great message. It encourages kids to see inventing as problem solving. And to be persistent in finding the solutions to those problems. I also really appreciated seeing women of color featured (and normalized) so prominently in the book, as the main character, the scientist, and the teacher. Some of the writing felt a little stiff. But the story is beautiful, and it inspired my kids to want to think about inventing on their own.

I cannot speak highly enough of this book! Abby Invents is now a series, so I encourage you all to not only buy this first book but also get the second, My daughter fell in LOVE with Abby and with inventing things after reading this. She came away from this story believing in herself and her ability to be an inventor and solve problems... This is the kind of messaging and representation we need in STEM.

A wonderful book!! As a scientist and young father, I often come across children's books that present the scientific/engineering process like a magical montage that, within a page or so, results in a profound discovery. Here, however, Dr. Simon provides a refreshingly realistic portrayal of this process -- from question to patent -- with experimental parameters that could actually be relevant to the work Abby sets out to do! Coupled with wonderful illustrations and lab notebook-like asides within the story affording us glimpses into Abby's thought process and protocols, I couldn't have dreamed up a better way to slyly (full disclosure) coax my daughter into developing a love of science!

Such an inspiring book for young girls and boys. It is important for children's books to paint a world where children regardless of race or culture can see themselves as belonging. This book does just that. Much kudos to author for writing such a compelling and motivating story that young girls and boys, particularly of color, can enjoy and feel encouraged to dream.

Great story with a young girl role model. She follows the scientific process to find a solution to a problem. All kids need to read this! #girlscientists
