How does this differ from the previous model?

This model has a newer and slightly higher quailty chip or chip set in the DAC section. If using on a truly high end Stereo set up, you would have to have the hearing of a bat to notice a difference. If your Stereo set up is anything less then stellar, the earlier configuration will work well.

My bluetooth transceiver supports both aptx and aptx-ll, but pairs automatically, as does this device. how do i know which codec it's using?

Still aptx but your bluetooth device must be compatible to connect in BT 5.0.. As aptx HD codec is on an higher bandwidth 24bit depth 48kHz sampling rate higher than CD/cda format 44100kHz 16bit. Your device required to be compatible at aptx HD 48kHz 24bit, BT5.0 stream. You may need to check for OEM specifications before you purchase.

If I am using the one connected device and someone tries to pair another Bluetooth device, will it interfere with first device during playback?

no, it will not interfere with playback as the other person will not get the option to connect. Only 1 device can be connected at a time. Hope this helps.

Any issues with connecting to a Mac?
