Jaco Pastorius: Modern Electric Bass

We Are Fortunate...That Jaco Gave Us This Classroom Lesson!
There's only ONE Jaco isn't there? He didn't live long enough to beat this epic teaching tool. While others will moan about JACO being past his primed-ignore that stinkin' thinkin’…Jaco knew how important this teaching gig was…and Jaco loved the idea of teaching others-so he cleaned up for this fantastic study on electric bass.He also respected Jerry who does the interview. Amazing thing about Jerry-he doesn’t have flash chops like Jaco but make no mistake-if you listen to the BB King Record -“Completely Well” on which Jerry is featured - you would be hard pressed to find a more melodic bassist with a deep pocket and fantastic time. When BB won his Grammy for “The Thrill Is Gone” he apparently got on his knees to Jerry and said sincerely: “Thank you!”I want to say the TRIO Jams here are excellent. And I mean EXCELLENT. (DVD Version) They could package those on their own! It’s lonely being a bassist. Takes a special type of person to take the abuse of condescending lead instruments-which happens all the time. With Jaco-we learnmelody…and get even. That alone should be reason to jump at the CD, the DVD, the enclosed book that transcribes many of the sections. We’re lucky to have this! Get all items connected to this educational enterprise -from CD to DVD. Then work it. Don’t let it sit around. Find a jazz player to help you -have some fun. Keep it in a trio format -so you can be heard.-MS

Buy this bass man.
To be honest, though the live performances are typical Jaco making you go... ahhhh, and WOW, simultaneously, the camera angles change to much, the video is grainy, and not much care was taken with the recording or mix of the band. The interview/lesson format works well for me though after initially wishing the other guy wasn't even there. But I believe Jaco's recounting of how he started learning bass in the beginning, particularly the scale and rudimentary exercises he picked up playing tuba parts on electric bass in a school concert band, is incredibly interesting. And unlike so many instructional videos, he goes on to show how he turned those rudiments into soloing and songwriting, all in incremental bits. Then he gets on to some of his advanced technique, but I like that there's something here to play along and be learned for beginning and intermediate bass players too. And you know, there's being nice for a camera, and then there's guys just being themselves that make you feel good to be around, guys like Jaco. So for that, this gets 5 stars, but really, know that the video production and sound reinforcement leaves a lot to be desired.

Jaco is GREAT
Why 3 stars... because if you're going to lay out the bread to watch Jaco do "The Chicken" you need aureal lessons not visual. Use the ear not the eye.I love Jaco as much as the next bass affecionado, and as my nom de plume suggests, I'm not a stranger to the Electric Bass, but my gawd people... this isn't the end all product to improve your playing.. That's called practice, rehearsal, having BIG EARS. With some technicality, good listening and patience YOU TOO CAN PLAY THE ELECTRIC BASS! Quit kicking sand in your own faces and get on it!I get the feeling that people love this demo for all the wrong reasons. It's not going to make you play any better, or worse, only you can do that.Jaco was a great influence on the vocabulary of the Electric Bass, and he was actually lucid when he made this video (for the day). I'm not taunting him or disrespecting him or anything of that nature. But if anyone knew the VALUE of hard work and application it was JACO. So sit down, move away from the T.V. and start working out on the instrument and the ear... not gluing your peepers to the T.V. and wishing... wishing is not good enough and hoping is not a method.my 2cents

If you are a fan of Jaco's....
Jaco was a great bassist and it's great to watch him and hear him describe how he got his sound. Jaco was an interesting person who died too soon but still was on the scene long enough to influence so many musicians. I only wish the DVD was more instructional, but how can you teach what he could do?

Excelente

I was surprised just a bit that I loved this video so much
As a non bass player, I was surprised just a bit that I loved this video so much... but it's so much a great interview and an informative look at Jaco Pastorius' amazing skills, it's a great augmentation to the fabulous Trujillo produced movie, "JACO"... so glad I bought it!

A Must For Jaco Fans And Bass Players
Being a Bass player I am always amazed at the sounds Jaco could coax out of his Fender Jazz Bass. While there are many great Bass players Jaco brought Bass playing to a true art form. Weather you are a fan of Jaco or a Bass player you will want to add this to your video library. Highly recommended.

A bass lesson from the master
This DVD is worth buying for several reasons. One is that it contains the only film ever to exist of bass legend Jaco Pastorius explaining technique, theory and exercises for the bass guitar but it also relates to music in general. The DVD also comes with a booklet with all the exercises that Jaco plays written out in standard notation so you have to be able to read music to understand them. The DVD is more of an interview with Jaco explaining aspects of bass playing as opposed to a formal lesson. Running to almost 90 minutes, the last half hour of the DVD is a jam featuring Jaco playing several songs with two other musicians. Recommended if you are a fan of Pastorius or bass guitar in general. This is an important document not to be missed.
