Q: Will my 15 pound maltese mix fit in it? Many people are saying it is small.

I got the medium one and my dog is 10.2 pounds and he fits really well. He has room to move around and get comfortable. I also have a small fleece throw blanket in there for him to lay on, so I would think your dog might be a little snug, but should be okay and not uncomfortable.

Q: Would this fit a small SUV?

I bought it for use in my 2010 Honda Accord. It works well with our 6 year old Labradoodle, who is very mellow in the car. It works fine for short trips with our 8 month old boxer, but not so well on longer trips because she found a way around it. The overall size is quite adequate for my 2010 Accord. My guess would be that it would fit a small SUV. It does have two discs attached to the back side. These discs slide between your seat where the seat belts come out to hold the cover more securely.

Q: Is there some kind of stiffener in the edge surrounding the top of the seat? If so, is it metal?

There is a very sturdy metal rod in the top of the mesh-sided seat. This is a very nice car seat ... my miniature poodle has plenty of room to get comfy in it.
