AMERICAN HUNTER R-Pro Kit Digital Timer & Guard

Update 5/7/2015 as in the past, the timer fail before the end of the season, I give up on the product, fails me every time, I have 5 on the shelf that look good, but fail./ Ordered the digital feeder on 22nd of May 2014, USED, to take advantage of the reduced price, a couple of days later it was being offered considerably cheaper, brand new, than the used one that i received. The coil is different than the picture, having only two strands as opposed the the four on the ad. I have used American Hunter feeders, analog, before and the timers last only one 3 mos. deer season and need to be replaced, the clock face fails to turn. I ordered this digital hoping that the feeding times set will go off as I preset. The package arrived as announced and the timer is easy to set, if you follow the written instructions, otherwise, a nightmare. I like digital feeders that friends have and hope to afford another one soon. I like the service I get from Amazon, and will report on the timer in November.

I have and use many of these feeders and they work well. They can jam if the corn isn't clean. I modify them to run on better rechargable batteries than the spring tops they are designed to use. I also change the spinner plate to a flat one (old style) so they don't jam as much. I have 7 of these I use year round and 4 more I use just during hunting season. The only reason I have ever replaced them is when the bears figure out a way to damage them, and then many times I can piece together parts of different feeders to make a working one. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because they used to make these with a metal frame which was sturdier than the now plastic one. The older ones were more rugged and had a nicer varmit guard, in my opinion. As I stated, I've got seven that run 24/7/365. All in all a good feeder.

Top quality. Make sure you get the PRO model! The only problem I have had is when the bears knock down my feed and bust it up. IMPORTANT - I only use the digital model (Pro) because of ease of use. Also, I have found it is extremely helpful to buy a solar charger. You can get the American Hunter solar charger that plugs right into the feeder/controller, or you can buy a generic solar charger (a little less expensive) and wire it directly to the battery. I recommend the American Hunter solar charger.

The title "and Varmint guard" could be misleading as my unit did not have that function because the transformer is not included. It is wired for it. So it does not have a functional varmint guard. It has part of it. You must buy the transformer separately to make it work.They might be calling the wire a varmint guard but both birds and squirrels know how to get past the wire if its not powered on. Fortunately, my old failed unit had a transformer and its not a real shocker so don't expect them to fly off with feet outstretched and hair raised. Its a bit uncomfortable for them but some squirrels still try to get the seed from the spreader and they do despite the shock.Other than those clever squirrels chewing on things like the solar panel and the barrel the unit works fine. I got 2 seasons from the first one before the clock failed. Old clock type.

I bought the American hunter feeder to replace a Moultre feeder. Which they said it would work on, the Moltrie 200 pound storage container. Well it did but only after I made up a new bracket to adapt it. What I did was took a piece of 1/4 inch thick plastic, drilled the holes in it to mount on the Moltrie feeder, because it just has 3 legs hanging down so it's a precise mount, then drilled holes in the same 1/4 inch plastic for the American feeder to mount too and now it works. It looks like it should hold up better than the moultrie feeder because on the American Hunter they did raise the motor so water couldn't drain back into it. Time will tell, but I have a better feeling about it. It is also easy to program like the Moltrie.

This is the second one of these I've had and both have worked flawlessly, I read some bad reviews on these but gave it a try anyway and have been nothing but pleased, the first set-up was kind-a confusing but after a couple of times its actually pretty easy, my first one worked for three years with just three batteries and feeds daily for 15 seconds so I would say the solar charger work as should. I had to buy the second one because it got very windy one day and blew over and the mounting tabs broke, I'm building a bracket to mount it on a 5 gal bucket to put on another spot on my property as it survived the nine foot drop, other than mounting tabs. Over-all very pleased with it and will buy again if needed

this is not a digital unit. It is analog meaning it using a very inexpensive craft clock kit and as the clock rotates, the face trips the spinner. The mechanics of the spinner all works great. And this was a good fit replacement for my old one that went out (digital). HOWEVER, the small clock unit only worked for 2 days. So I bought one at Walmart for $5 and will install/replace it. Their units have two choices analog and digital. The digital i really great, but expensive to replace when it goes out (3 years later). This analog one using a craft clock...just don't know why they went really, really cheap on the clock device.

Purchased this to replace the one that was on our feeder originally that my husband somehow managed to knock over with the lawn mower and break. It attached using the exact same holes from the original so no having to drill new holes. The only thing I see as different from the picture is that the wire guard is not exactly as shown. Mine is only about 1/2 the height as the picture, only 2 time around with the wire instead of the 4 shown. That's better for me because we had a big problem with squirrels trying to get to the spinner part. The connections for all of the wires for the various attachments is labeled very clearly so it was really easy to connect the new solar panel/charger to it. Was a breeze to hook up.
