It's a meat tenderizer. Well, it tenderizes meat.
When my sister moved out, she took my parents meat tenderizer. We used to make Chicken Fried Steak regularly and she always loved just using our full metal meat tenderizer. Now 20 or so years later, I realize I have not had Chicken Fried Steak in forever and look to Amazon. I can't find the all-metal version but get this. So far it has been good, The wood handle and metal head do exactly as expected. I've pounded a few steaks and chicken breasts and it works as desired. It's called Extra-Large and Heavy-Duty. It seems similar in size to all I have seen and I am not sure if I would put this in a kitchen that is producing a dozen chicken-fried steaks a day, but for me I suspect it will be fine for a while.

Works well after gluing the handle
The mallet head was loose when it arrived, but I didn't want to return it as the mallet was a good size and seemed sturdy. So a few drops of super glue seemed to do the trick. It has worked well ever since.

Well crafted and, as a cook, versatile. A good product and good value.
I like the broad faces and the faceted head featuring two grades of coarseness. The broad convex sides of the head are ideal for more delicate meats such as pork, veal and chicken.

beware
This is literally a piece of junk.. the head is hollow. The handle broke the very first blow.. not much else to say.. please don't believe previous reviews some of which are outright lies-like the commercial quality,or the 2lb head comment; the head weighs less than 10 oz..this sort of product has me want to give up Amazon!!! and I am a huge Amazon fan and user..

meat hammer
well. if you want to get all manly macho tenderizing meats,..THIS is the one for you. just the shear handling of this makes you feel like Thor himself. construction is great. handles great. this reminds those of us old enough to remember the hammer at the circus to ring the bell. you can really lay down the weight when you handle meats.

Was expecting a heavier hammer head. Also, the head is loose and will need a few shims.

Not a full solid metal block of aluminum
The hammer is not full aluminum. Am a full time chef and was really not happy for the price.
