Dionysus

I've been a big DCD fan since 1985. This album does carry on their "tradition" and style of evoking several emotions one wouldn't usually encounter blended together in music, such as joy and ominousness. There is strength and quality in the nature of the compositions here, in spite of the flaws one may encounter. The band has continued to bring inspirations and influences from Eastern Europe, Greece, Africa, India, and the Middle East. In part to lower the cost of production and studio time, Brendan Perry said in an interview that they've really gotten into sampling instruments a lot. While I would very much prefer the sound of the real thing, I have to admit that here I sometimes can't tell if it's real or a sample, so accurate the technology has become. Apart from it's disappointing brevity, another strange thing about this release is Lisa Gerrard's voice being relegated mostly to the background textures. Seldom is she singing up-front at all, and when she is her voice is processed electronically to some desired effect...which is fine, they've always done that at times, but where are the performances in the foreground and simply direct-to-microphone as on Spiritchaser and Into the Labyrinth? Her (straightforward) vocals are always stunning, and I miss them here. All in all however, this is a worthy release to add to anyone's DCD collection.

4 stars not quite like their older music

This is not meant to be a music review. The album is excellent in case you're wondering. I give it 5 stars (That being said, I would not be mad if it were a bit longer, it's only 36 minutes in duration but I rather be left wanting more rather than getting too much of a good thing).On to the issue...My issue with the actual CD (I've tried two copies) is that I can't get it to play on 3 different Mac computers which leads me to believe that it may have something to do with the manufacturing of the CD itself. Ive tried 2 different copies so far with the same results. Both CD's are absolutely clean and pristine yet none of the computers will recognize either of the CDs. I also tried my car CD player and had no problems playing it so this leads me to believe there may be some sort of technical issue with the way it was manufactured.I will not take any stars away from the review because the music is absolutely amazing (if you can get it to play that is). Is anyone else have a similar experience?

Beautiful record. If you love DCD, you will not be disappointed.

As a longtime fan of DCD I have been listening to the progression of their music for a long time. While I do appreciate this album and I love the sound, it is entirely too reminiscent of the last album they published. They have been experimenting with sound and rhythm for a long time and I wanted something more akin to the transition between The Serpents Egg and Aion. Would I purchase this album regardless? Yes. It is still a great album. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars for that reason.

The vinyl version of "Dionysus" was pressed on black 180-gram vinyl by GZ Media in the Czech Republic. There is also a "deluxe" version on purple vinyl with included CD and a book should you be so inclined. The LP I received was perfectly flat and defect-free, with a total absence of any surface noise whatsoever, allowing the hypnotic sounds and music to emerge from a totally "black" background. Yes, the playing time is shorter than I (and apparently most other reviewers) would have liked, even for the vinyl format, but the sonics here are superb. If you liked "Spiritchaser" you will appreciate this latest release.

I am a long-time DCD fan - 20-odd years. This is their worst album. For the most part, they are just recycling the sound of the "Spiritchaser" era. Lots of "ethnic" percussion, most of which I suspect are samples.Real vocals do not start until Track 4. Tracks 1, 2 and 3 use synthesized choral vocals and there may be a couple of brief Lisa Gerrard samples in Tracks 2 and 3, but they could be anyone. 1, 2 and 3 would also be considered instrumental fillers on earlier DCD CDs. Pleasant enough ethno-darkwave New Age for car music, but I'd never sit down to listen to them by themselves.The best track is Track 5, "Invocation", which is Ms. Gerrard subdued but not soaring. The remaining 3 tracks are kind of their patented "DCD" sound, but without much energy or enthusiasm. Nothing to really grab you, nothing new...Perry was a better vocalist when he was preaching at us. For a CD titled "Dionysus" there is absolutely nothing Dionysian about any track on this CD.But you got to buy this CD to support these artists. Maybe next time they'll get it right.Ms. Gerrard certainly is certainly wonderful on her own, pretty successfully. She's doing some very interesting music and occasionally with some very interesting collaborators.

How can you rate a beautiful piece of work highly in the digital age that only runs 36:10. Does DCD really think the price tag for this brief masterpiece is fair. This will always be a love/hate recording for me because of it's brevity. I find myself wanting at least 24 more minutes of this majestic and mesmerising music. All DCD fans must hear this but I'm sure the reaction to it's length will be universal. I'm just settling into and it's almost over.

Über dieses Album zu schreiben, ist recht schwierig. Ich möchte nicht auf die Diskussion eingehen, ob es ein DCD Album ist oder nicht. Das wird zu aufwendig. Ich sage mal nur so viel, der Name Dead Can Dance ist marketingtechnisch erfolgversprechender als ein Solowerk von Brendan Perry oder meinetwegen auch Lisa Gerrard.„Dionysos“ ist das mittlerweile neunte Studioalbum der Ausnahmeband Dead Can Dance. Und ja, es ist sehr anders als die anderen Alben und doch auch wieder sehr DCD. Wie lang ein Album ist, sagt nichts über den Inhalt und die Qualität aus. Ich hätte auch gerne mehr Musik gehabt, aber ich bin auch nicht der Schöpfer dieses Werkes.Wie beschreibt man dieses Album? Es ist aufgeteilt in zwei Akten mit jeweils 3 bzw. 4 Teilen. Es ist sehr sphärisch gehalten, erinnert irgendwo an etwas zwischen „Aion“ und „Into the labyrinth“ und Anleihen von „Spiritchaser“. Aber eine Schublade? Nicht für DCD. Weltmusik? Ich bin da immer ein wenig hin und hergerissen. Sicher, dieses Album ist nun nichts Neues oder Weltbewegendes. Wie schon gesagt, man erkennt, wer die Verursacher sind. Doch es klingt auch wie ein Soundtrack oder eine Samplingsammlung. Man hört Schafe, bulgarische Frauenstimmen, verschiedenste Geräuschsamples und ab und zu mal, viel zu wenig, die Stimme der von den meisten hochverehrten Lisa Gerrard. Auch Brendan Perry ist sehr wortkarg. Kann es sein, dass viele der Fans gerade damit hadern? Nur muss ich immer wieder als Fan meine Erwartungen erfüllt wissen? Schließlich erschaffen die Künstler ihr Werk, und nicht die Auftragsarbeit der Fans. Auch ich hadere immer noch ein wenig mit diesem Werk und dachte anfangs, na toll, haben sie paar alte Bänder gefunden, sie neu bearbeitet und ein neues Album daraus erschaffen, nur, um nicht ganz in Vergessenheit zu geraten oder die Portokasse mal wieder aufzufüllen. Aber je öfter ich „Dionysos“ höre, umso mehr gefällt es mir. Und das ganz im Gegensatz zu ihrem letzten Album.Schon „Sea Born“ klingt sehr nach DCD, sakral, sehr percussionlastig, denke ich, könnte man auch gut live präsentieren. Und man ist sofort in der DCD Welt. Alles klingt sehr erhaben, würdevoll. Streicher, Trommeln, Soundcollagen, mal ab und zu Lisas Stimme und ein wenig Brendan Perry. Sie bleiben konsequent bei ihrem Thema und fast klingt es so, als ob sie ihre eigene Musikgeschichte reflektieren. Ich mag ja nicht nur Vergleiche heranziehen, denn dieses Album ist eigenständig genug, aber man hört, je mehr man sich mit diesem Album befasst, immer wieder Reminiszenzen ihrer frühen Werke. So wenig DCD scheinbar anfangs in diesem Album steckt, so viel mehr kann man Neues und altes neu entdecken. Sie haben eine Hommage an sich selbst veröffentlich, möchte man fast meinen. Andere mögen sagen, naja, eben neu aufgewärmt. Und bis kurz nach der Veröffentlichung hätte ich dem auch zugestimmt. Doch ich wollte dem Album auch eine Chance geben. Und gerade der Opener des zweiten Akts, „The Mountain“, nimmt mich immer wieder gefangen. Egal, ob ich glaube, darin „Rakim“ und „Yulunga“ zu erkennen. Ich mag dieses Tempo, dieses Eigene, das dieser Song in sich hat. Das Getragene, zeremonielle, das diesen Sound ausmacht.Für fünf Sterne reicht es auch bei mir leider nicht. Aber knapp daran vorbeigeschrammt. So ein letzter Funken Innovation wäre es gewesen. Aber was soll man nach all den Alben noch machen, was DCD nicht schon gemacht haben? Für mich ein gelungeneres Werk als „Anastasis“. Aber über dieses Album werden sich die Fans sehr sicher nicht einig werden. Zwischen Genial und Selbstplagiat wird alles vorhanden sein. Doch soll sich jeder seine eigene Meinung dazu bilden. Dieses Album hat für mich alles, was ein Dead Can Dance Album ausmacht.

C’D arrivato in tempi brevi e in condizioni perfette

Like other reviewers, at first it felt a bit like 'yes, alright, but now what ?!' But after a few listens I started to 'feel' its vibe. And once you get it, there is no turning back. One minus point is that it is a very short work. In my opinion it could've been much longer.
