Same Hugault fun - just less of it.
Romain Hugault's graphic novels have been a brilliant way for me to improve my French but after ploughing through his Eidelweiss Pilot series I've started to appreciate him as an artist. BD are far more of a tradition in France and a number of these publications offer some extremely impressive art as well as gripping tales. Gradually I've become a fan of the drawings and whilst I was initially a bit reluctant about buying these Pin Up wings series, I bought the second volume out of curiosity. The scenario is simple - a combination of vintage aircraft couple with models very much in the spirit of those that were so often painted on the fuselage of American aircraft. Of the three, volume 1 is the least interesting. The earliest in the series, Hugault's art is not quite so sophisticated as in the next two volumes and the last third of the book consists solely of girls and no planes. Some reviewers have challenged the invited artists yet I quite like many of those in volume 3. However, of the bunch, volume 2 is the best as the aircraft are wonderfully drawn and are more iconic. Several of the pictures in this book have subsequently been used as posters for air-shows because they are so good.Volume One includes B17, spitfires, Grumman Duck, Skyraiders, Focke Wolf, Mustangs and Lightning but the page facing each illustration is blank apart from a small piece of text in French. In later volumes the illustrations are either double spread or one on each page. i.e. More pictures. the visual gags are still there. Anything by Hugault is worth snapping up by this edition of Pin Up wings is goo but not as excellent as the other two.
