Compass Diameter is 1.5", not 3".
Item received was exactly as pictured. Actual outside diameter of the brass assembly I received is one and three quarters inches (1-3/4"). Diameter of the compass itself is about one and one half inches(1-1/2"). Height of the brass assembly with cap in place is two and fifteen thirty seconds inches (2-15/32"). The upper ferule is three quarters of an inch tall (3/4") and has an inside diameter of thirteen sixteenths of an inch (13/16"). The three pieces of threaded rod included are each one and three quarters inch (1-3/4") long. Two of the rods are five sixteenths inch in diameter with 18 threads per inch (5/16"-18 tpi). The third rod is three eighths of an inch (3/8") in diameter with sixteen threads per inch. The base of the compass assembly is drilled and tapped for the 5/16"-18 tpi rod. The compass needle is painted red on the end that points north. The card below it is clearly marked with five degree graduations and numbers in 20 degree increments, along with eight major compass points. The needle movement is not dampened, which should not be a problem when it comes to reading the compass once it is mounted on a stick, but I wonder how long it will last with the constant jarring motion a walking stick gets. I'll probably never know, since I won't be using it on my stick. A three inch ball would be about right for me, but this little thing gets lost in my hand and would not give me enough to grab onto to move my stick properly. It's a nifty little nick-knack though, and I'm not sorry I bought it. It was kind of fun to receive a package from India with a customs declaration attached indicating a total value of U.S. - 5.00.

Misleading
The brass housing is nice, and it does come all of the parts in the picture, but that is the only Pros. Deep down I should have know that is not a real functioning compass, but what I received was far from useful. It was not liquid filled and did not rotate in any real readable way that it would be useful. I am going to use but not as a compass but a housing for a small survival kit. I would never buy this again or suggest any to buy this product ever. I do not write reviews at all but this deserve a truly negative review.

Nice item
It took nearly 2 months to arrive, but when it did, I was quite pleased. It is much bigger than I imagined, and has a nice weight to it. It will look good once I get it on my staff.

It's ok but.... the compass isn't ...
It's ok but.... the compass isn't centered in the brass and requires hand filing and polishing. I'll find another maker for the next one I get commissioned to make.
