Two classic films from 1969 on a budget priced blu-ray fron Mill Creek Entertainment
Mill Creek Entertainment pairs up two classic 1969 films "Age of Consent" and "Cactus Flower" for a budget priced blu-ray release. The former stars James Mason & Helen Mirren while the latter stars Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman & Goldie Hawn in her feature film starring debut which garnered her a best supporting actress academy award. Both are romantic comedies though "Cactus Flower" leans more towards being a straight up comedy at times while "Age of Consent" leans more to the romantic side of comedy for the most part. Both films share a dual layer blu-ray and I should mention to fans of "Age Of Consent" that the full uncut 107 minute version of the film is what is included with this release rather than the truncated 98 minute cut which mainly removed nudity by Helen Mirren. Each film is presented in their original 1.85 aspect ratios (despite the back of the case listing "Age of Consent as 1.78:1). Using the AVC codec with an average bit rate of 25 for "Age of Consent" and 30 for "Cactus Flower", both films look quite good. Thankfully no digital noise reduction appears to have been done at all due to the films feature prominent but never obtrusive film grain which represent the films how they were meant to look. Colors are nicely saturated and contrast levels look natural too. I am not sure how recent each of these HD masters were done but they look much better than the past DVD releases to my eyes.Audio for both is in 2 channel LPCM. No English subtitles or extras are included.Considering this disc goes for a bit less than 9 dollars currently and both of these films are classics, you cannot go wrong picking it up. Add in the fact that the full uncut version of "Age of Consent" was thankfully included and you can't go wrong.

Two great semi forgotten classics
I don't know who did or why these two films were packaged together, but what a treat. Cactus Flower is a great romantic dramedy with a great cast, and Age of Consent is not really what you might infer from the title and cover picture. It's not another Lolita ( in which James Mason also stars). Yes there is female nudity but nothing full frontal or actually much of it. I liked it for the stars and the Queensland islands location. There's also a nice satirical scene about modern art in the beginning (anybody remember Peggy Cass?). Anyway, 2 good movies.

Very enjoyable movie
I think I first saw Helen Mirren in a movie called "Shadow Boxer". I really like that movie and Helen's performance was excellent as the dying assassin the finds redemption in the end. So, when I noticed that Helen Mirren was in this particular movie "Age of Consent", I had to watch it.In this movie Helen Mirren plays an adolescent girl stuck in an island living with her grandmother who happened to be an alcoholic. It was amazing to watch Helen so young. In the movie Helen gets to pose for a famous painter and you get to see Helen naked. I have to tell you she had and incredible physique. What I thought was the most interesting aspect of the movie is how two individuals, Helen and the painter, with such an age difference are able to develop a really close relationship. The painter went to the island to find that creative spirit that had allowed him to be so successful in the art world and that he had somehow lost. Helen, on the other hand, was looking for her identity as a woman and her dream was to leave the island and make something of herself. When the two of them met, their two paths converged and were able to find in each other what they were looking for.I really like this movie and I highly recommend it.

A very interesting combination of outstanding movie productions.
In Age of Consent, the protagonists (James Mason and Hellen Mirren) offer the blessed gift of their magical talent. Their performances combine professional acting experience (Mason) with the emergence of a young shooting star (Mirren).Cactus Flower is a very entertaining comedy film, which includes such great Holywood names as Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthaw and the debut of the young and amazing Goldie Hawn, whose performace won her a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award.

Fun times two
I loved the movie "Cactus Flower" with Walter Matthau, a radiant Ingrid Bergman and the delightful Goldie Hawn. A feel good flick from the 60's. The second movie "Age of Consent" was okay, with a good performance by James Mason and the debut of Helen Mirren, but a bit slow in places without much of a story.

Excellent transfers, no restoration, no subtitles
I am reviewing the quality of the transfers, as watched on a 65" Panasonic plasma, THX cinema-calibrated. Both movies have excellent picture quality: very sharp image, accurate colors, very pleasant film grain. There are some rare and tiny dirt speckles but not obtrusive. There are no subtitles, unfortunately, but the actors are completely intelligible, even at low volume (not always the case...). The two movies are on a single disk, presumably double-layered, but without visible compression artifacts.Overall, a bargain product featuring two highly recommended movies, with excellent picture and sound.

Very Good Double Feature
Blu-ray arrived in great condition. Reasonably priced at my time of purchase, under $10. Very early Goldie Hawn and Helen Mirren, late 60s. Single disk, Age of Consent, R, 106 min., widescreen, Cactus Flower, PG, 103 min., widescreen, no special features.

one 3 and one 5 stars
Age of Consent was an inferior movie, but I watched it (mostly at double speed), and I'll never watch it again. 3 stars.Cactus Flower was excellent. Sure, a romantic comedy, so it was silly, but it was an excellent movie. 5 stars. Worth the price.

A fun movie from the 1960s
What a wonderful step back in time. I saw this movie back in 1969 and thoroughly enjoyed it.It's movie that shouldn't be taken too seriously, many of the characters are deliberately over the top. It has a bit of utopian appeal when we see the artist (James Mason ) on a coral island beach with a beautiful model (Helen Mirren). Mirren and Mason both give good performances in a fairly undemanding script. The movie has a number of comedic actors which make it a lot of fun. Mirren is stunning in the underwater nude scenes. The nude scenes are beautifully shot and in no way pornographic despite the R rating on the cover.I would have given 5 stars but the disk is being sold in Australia with A country code instead of B. Fortunately I have a multi region player. Amazon should have put that detail in the product description.

2 for 1
I purchased this for Cactus Flower. Goldie Hawn in her debut performance which she won the Oscar for best supporting actress. Funny movie.Age of consent I had not seen or heard of before. It was an ok movie. The BLURAY is by a low budget distributor, so there’s no special features and don’t expect criterion collection visual or sound quality either. You get what you pay for. That being said the visual and sound quality are ok. It’s better than some of those that are nothing more than a DVD or vhs port over BLURAYs.

No special features or menus
Age of Consent, Cactus Flower - Double Feature - BD [Blu-ray] has absolutely no menus or special features. Simply play one or the other. The transfer is not to bad, sound is closer to mono than the stated stereo. The films are actually quite good story wise. I liked the Age of Consent (drama) better than the Cactus Flower (comedy). There are a few nude scenes in the Age of Consent so if you like Helen Mirren and wondered what she was like when young you can see her.

Buyer beware
Both movies on one disk. Which was damaged and played badly thru first movie...worse for second movie. Not worth watching. I won't buy moviex thru amazon again.
