JIM DUNLOP HE112P Flat Thumbpicks, Medium, 3/Player's Pack

This was a gift to a youth to help with holding picks while strumming.

I have trouble finding picks that do not slip off my thumb, or ride too high on my thumb knuckle. (My fingers are one place on my body that never gains weight or puts on fat.) These fit snugly and comfortably and are pliable. Have you seen the ads for the very pricy picks that have springs in them? I decided to try these first, and they are everything I need for 1/30th the price. These also have holes drilled in the plastic to make them very easy to grip if you decide to change to using them as a flat pick. I can easily move back and forth between thumb picking and flat picking with these dandy little guys. I use these for dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, mandolin, and banjo and ukulele. Five stars for me.

I have used thumb picks for years and I have tried nearly type/brand you can come across and nothing available over the counter compares to Herco thumb picks. The 4 Star rating I feel is warranted as of the 3 types of Herco's, in my experience they don't all have the same performance. Light, Medium and Heavy refers to the thickness of the pick material and the thicker they are the more tension and pressure they put on the thumb (they aren't small-medium-large). I strongly prefer the Medium picks as they have reasonable tension/thumb pressure, stay on well (unless you're really pounding the strings strumming and catch a string on an upstroke) and are easy to grip like a flat pick when necessary. 5 Stars on Mediums as I buy these over and over again to replace lost ones, ones I gave away, ones my dog chewed up if left out or ones I simply wore out. The light picks are too "wimpy" for my taste, they don't stay on very well for me without gripping like a flat pick and the tension is often too light. I've tried compressing/pinching them closed to make them snugger on the thumb, but they don't have "plastic memory" and loosen up quickly. For me, with regular size thumbs, they just don't work very well, but they do have very comfortable tension and if you have a light touch, they might work for you. 3 Stars since they still beat a lot of the competitors. The heavy's I use occasionally but find the tension on them somewhat too strong & uncomfortable after they are on a while. I sometimes pull them more open to loosen them up some and this often helps -- but it's not a precise science and I have broken them doing this. Mainly, I find the Heavy picks have more pressure than I like and are much like the Fender, Ernie Ball, etc. thumb picks that I don't like all that well from a pressure/tension perspective, but Heavy Herco picks are still more comfortable due to the large surface area the pad of the thumb makes contact with than any of the other thumbs picks out there. 4 Stars on the Heavys. If you are going to give these picks a whirl, I would first try the Mediums. If you have large thumbs, the Lights (thin) might work for you, and if you have small thumbs the Heavys (thick) might work for you. If you can find the one with the correct tension/pressure for your thumb, you will like these picks! For my money, these are the best thumb pick out there if that's how you play.

I'm seeing a fair number of complaints about these inexpensive picks. No idea why. I like them a lot. They fit my style of intermingling fingerstyle and flat style without needing to change picks. Yes, up strumming is a bit of a challenge. But that's the sacrifice you'd expect from a combo style guitar pick. I guess I'm cheap cause I really don't want to spend $20 on the "other" premium combo pick. I'll stick with these.

I was hoping they were closer to jazz pick size (hard to tell from the picture). Even so, they aren't bad. I'll probably end up getting the 'real' blue herco thumbpicks at some point - there's still a shop or two online that sells them, but I'm mostly a flat/hybrid picker anyway, so this is sort of a bonus/novelty type for me. Not as adjustable as I'd like, but that goes along with the 'normal' size pick. Dinged a star for that. But I still use them. If you want to try some thumbpicks without spending a bunch of money or hoping your local store has some, and don't mind using the large 'normal' sized picks, these would probably be a great place for you to start.

I love these thumb picks. I am notorious for dropping my picks when playing so these are the perfect solution.

I'm 73. I play electric guitar on my couch. I drop flat picks. I never drop these. Slight adjustments in holding pressure and position and there is no problem picking anyway you want. medium is the most comfortable and versatile but weakens faster at the bend. heavy is uncomfortably stiff but the application of 'just enough (without melting)' heat at the bend will loosen the grip and it will last longer than the medium.

Just starting to play with a thumb pick so I bought three different kinds that I saw on a YouTube video. This is the one I like best.

Non sono mai riuscito ad abituarmi ai thumb picks diciamo piu' tradizionali, preferendo a seconda dei casi il plettro o le dita o magari insieme. Questo thumb pick unisce abbastanza bene entrambe le cose. Non e' immediato abituarsi anche perche' stringe un po' troppo il pollice ma puo' essere effettivamente utilizzato come in pletrro normale all'occorrenza. Potrebbe non essere l'ideale per chi impugna il plettro vicino alla punta perche' sporge un po' ed e' un po' difficile fare armoniche artificiali. Comunque io lo promuovo
