Delighted that someone has finally produced a book on an aspect of Lalique’s work which, as the author quite rightly points out, is largely overlooked – namely Lalique the medallist. The book is excellent with well organised chapters written in an eloquent and informative style. There are hundreds of illustrations and a ‘Reference’ section at the end and, very importantly for anyone who struggled with French exams, a ‘Translations’ section of all the letters, newspaper articles, posters etc.The book reproduces a body of work that you will not see in a single museum or collection. In addition there is an array of fascinating photos of Lalique's designs, documents such as letters sent by the fundraising committees to Department Prefects/Mayors explaining the organisation/details of the fundraising ‘Journées’, invoices from Lalique’s showroom and contemporary newspaper articles covering these national events. The author writes in an easy style. He has not written a detailed biography on Lalique preferring instead to focus on his designs as a medallist. The familiarity of the author with Lalique's work in this particular field makes for an excellent flowing text that is very informative without being overly academic.I feel that this is one of the most engaging, enjoyable and accessible books that I have read on Lalique. As well as giving the reader a comprehensive overview of Lalique the medallist, it provides an absorbing insight into the hardships that were experienced on a daily basis by the ‘Poilus’, their feeling of isolation from the rest of French society and the grim reality of trench warfare. ‘The Forgotten Years’ is an extremely enjoyable and highly enlightening read.
