The Magic Shop

Makes great reading for my ebook. H G Wells is one of my favourite authors and I was glad to be able to download this.

"It was no common shop this; it was a magic shop, and all the prancing precedence Gip would have taken in the matter of mere toys was wanting."Although I read HG Wells “The Magic Shop” via Kindle, I think this would be a fine story to listen to via audiobook because of its imaginative and whimsical atmosphere. There are amazingly fanciful scenes that would be great for a picture book as well. The story’s plot is rather simple: a man, having been urged by his son Gip to go into a magic shop, decide to do so. While in the store, it starts off innocent enough until various fantastical things appear to happen and the man, at points, wonders what is real and what is illusion; he also begins to fear for the safety of his son.I think one of the key elements of Well’s story is the idea of perception. What is authentically real and what is mere fantasy? Told from the point of view of the father, we see how he questions what is happening through his skepticism of what takes place within the confines of the magic shop and how he begins to have concerns. However, the boy’s vantage point is entirely opposite, so there is a certain level of ambiguity of whether what we see is sinister and dangerous, or simply just fascinating and enchanting.“The Magic Shop” is a short and simple story, but one that was quite enjoyable and imaginative. This is one that I would like to come back to later to revisit.

Gip and his father wander into a London magic shop for a look around. The proprietor playfully shows off his magic skills for the boy. At a point, the magic starts to get a little too genuine. And that is when the story starts to get a bit creepy.Loved it!5 STARS

I've been thinking about getting the story for a while. It's simple enough, a father and his son visit a mysterious magic shop. The visit begins in the standard fashion, but it evolves into a series of strange events that continues to concern the father. The child seems to enjoy himself thoroughly.It's a wholesome story, but my concern comes with some of the grammar and language. Some of it was just confusing. I use the dictionary on a few words and found no entry (A great feature of the Kindle app), and in a few places i tripped upon grammar that just seemed out of whack.All in all - a good short read. Very descriptive.

Excellent, but it needs footnotes related to when it was written in the early 20th century to put its various references into better context.The illustrations were successfully magical but sometimes didn't follow the text.The magician seems based on Alfred Hitchcock's TV episode with the clerk looking like DavidOpatoshu, who's probably best remembered for hos role on Star Trek as Anan 7 in "a Taste of Armageddon.Enjoy!

I think I was in 4th grade when I first checked this book out of the library. I will never forget it. It is the book that gave me my love for reading. It kinda transported me, if you will, to another place and sparked my imagination. I have since read it with my daughters and now will be reading it to my grand daughter. What a fun book.

really well written and fun. Bought me back to the time I believed in magic...(as if I ever really outgrew it.)

Loved the book. Arrived quickly and as advertised.

えっ、こんな組み合わせってあり？　と驚いてすぐに買ってしまいました。というのも、SF作家として著名なH.G.ウェルズの短編のひとつに、現代絵本界で活躍するフランソワ・ロッカのトップレベルの絵がついた非常にぜいたくな作品だからです。短編はSFというより奇妙な味のファンタジーで、ウェルズの他の作品ほどあまり知られていないかもしれませんが、ボク個人としては非常に馴染みの深い作品であったせいもあります。実は学生時代にこの短編をもとにした人形劇をつくったことがあるのです。そんな作品を大好きなロッカは、はたしてどう絵本化したのか？　まあ、中身を見るまでもなく、充分魅力的なことはわかりましたけどね。絵本といっても、原文は大人向けのものなので、読むにはそれなりの英語力が必要。でも心配はいりません。「魔法を売る店」あるいは「マジックショップ」としてウェルズの邦訳版短編集に収録されているので、そちらを参照しながら読めば問題ないでしょう。怪しい雰囲気の絵をみるだけでも充分価値がありますよ。
