Hard-hitting simplicity
The story is simple. Mandy is born deaf, and it takes some time for the parents to realise that. They then disagree as to what should be done for her. The only time I had seen it before was as a young lad, when it first came out (I've never seen it crop up on TV), but certain scenes had stuck in my mind; they were all there, but some of the action obviously had been beyond my comprehension back then (was mum having an affair?). I can remember, as a child, being ashamed of crying over the final scene, but, 60+ years further on, I wasn't; and even now, just thinking of it, my eyes prickle. It's a simple story, simply told in black and white with the simplest of special effects (the face of a man shouting at Mandy filling the screen, but silence); very moving.

Excellent
Excellent movie about a 6 year old girl - Mandy who is born deaf. It is based in post war London. Attitudes were very different and people view her as a freak. Children are unkind and adults ignorant to her needs. Her parents fearing this move in with her father's parents, Nancy's grand parents who cushion her from the world. Mandy is unable to communicate so her other mother moves her to a School for hearing impaired. Mandy is wild due to her communication being impaired. She cries for her mother and the school decides to have her as a day pupil, not a boarder. It is a ground breaking movie which should be shown on TV more.

Very moving.
I probably cannot better some of the other reviews, but this film I remember seeing many years ago and it made me cry then. Watching it again, I see how it made me cry, because the scenes which depict the little girl's problems are filmed from her angle, we see close up shots of her eyes and face when she is thwarted or shouted at, we see her shock very close and her tears of incomprehension strike the viewer down immediately. I cried again when watching it, whatever else it may be, it is a very moving, beautifully filmed and acted portrayal or how disabled children (in her case, deaf) coped or did not cope in 50s England. This film should be in everyone's collection of great British movies.

Wrung a Tearful Emotional Response
My mother named me after Mandy's character in this film, so I've always had a soft spot for it, but I haven't seen it for many years now, since I was a child myself in fact. I was delighted to finally watch it again and it still wrung a tearful emotional response from me. What a wonderful actress Mandy Miller was - her character as a young deaf and dumb girl, totally lacking any ability to communicate with the silent world around her initially, is so utterly convincing. The plummy upper class British characters played by Phyllis Calvert and Terence Morgan seem rather dated now, but aren't irritating enough (in my opinion anyway) to detract from my overall enjoyment of the film.

Wonderful vintage b&w film - recommended
Always moving, such an inspirational story for the 50s, a hopeful decade if ever there was one. A young deaf girl faces a split between her parents and revolutionary new educational ideas for the hard of hearing. The real scenes in a school for deaf children are particularly moving. Phyllis Calvert and Terence Morgan are great as the parents, nice to see Beatrice Varley (usually cast as a quiet granny, or a bad boy's wretched mother) as a teacher in the school - not to mention young Mandy Morgan in the title role.

Reach for the tissues!
Love this film...last saw it as a child. Being Deaf myself it took me back to my own childhood. I too attended the local Royal school for the Deaf as a day pupil...the teachings were exactly the same! Brilliant feel good film, though you may need tissues!

... British film showing categorically why Many Miller was the greatest British child actress of the era
Top rate British film showing categorically why Many Miller was the greatest British child actress of the era.Brilliantly directed and performed by a first rate cast and tackling a subject that no doubt was usually unspoken about in the era.
