Would this model be possible for a 7 year old to build, with adult assistance? He's very interested in the technical aspect of steam engines.

No. Perhaps by an experienced adult with 7 year old supervision! I, too, am interested in technical aspects of steam locomotives, but this kit, though technically accurate, does not adequately explain what the various components do, or how they relate to each other. Better to do research on steam locomotives on the internet before trying to assemble the kit if you want to know what the pieces are supposed to represent.

It is HO scale but it has no engine... it's just a model. Just like the model cars that you assemble and put in a display case.
