Eye-Opening, Versatile Recipes and Wonderful Writing
This has quickly become on of my favorite cookbooks. Great recipes and a writing style that is fun and relatable, not intimidating. You can really feel the joy and pride in this cookbook - from learning their family story and how they've built a business together; to how the Mei Mei crew approach community, hospitality and sustainability; and the way they meld styles and ingredients for some truly delicious food. I love how they take non-traditional ingredients and local specialties (maple syrup, cranberries!) and work them into more traditional Chinese applications. There are so many recipes here that can make it onto your table any night of the week - plus techniques and preparations that you can adapt in many new ways. And they all work!Even if you never cook from this book, you'll appreciate the photography, design and great storytelling. It will make you want to be part of the Li family! I've only been to Mei Mei once but can't wait to get back.

Family dining for even the pickiest of eaters
I love this book. Their approach to creating dishes made for family style eating, with their Chinese-American background influencing all their food results in accessible deliciousness for all. They have everything marked for vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and dairy allergies. As someone with a gluten allergy, I love the variety of amazing food that they offer (and gluten free alternatives) that don't make me feel as if I'm missing out on the good food.

Definately not your Mama's Chinese cookbook
If you are looking for traditional Chinese food that you would find in restaurants or have more familiarity, I would suggest you pass this book by and look for Grace Young, Fuschia Dunlop, Martin Yan, or Irene Kuo.However, if you have an open mind, like fusion and modern twists, then give this book a go. You will not be bored or find it the same old same old you see in every other Chinese cookbook. At first glance I was like Mmph, weird. After forcing myself to make a few recipes and really look at the book, my impression of it went up several notches. The book is fun, written by people who like what they are doing and like food, it shows. There are great pictures, the ingredients are laid out and then the recipe is well written. The roasted Miso maple potatoes were really good. The sweet maple with the salty miso really worked.Dim sum turnip cakes were met with mixed feelings. The recipe is easy to follow and the texture was just like we get at pushcart dim sum. However, the bacon threw us off and seemed to dominate the flavor. I made them again using dried shrimp, and half without any meat type flavoring, and we liked the one without any backdrop of meat, just showcasing the turnip (or, in this case, the daikon radish.)You Xiang Eggplant with cranberries and almonds was like nothing I have every made or tasted before. It was really good in a weird way, I would make it again. The cranberries, which sound odd, actually worked in the way raisins work in curry, adding that touch of tart sweetness in a savory dish.I loved the leafy greens gratin. Rice, greens, garlic, milk, cheese, and a garlic panko topping was just awesome. I liked it cold too.If you want to use Asian inspired flavors but get out of the usual food slump I recommend this book. It will definitely expand your repertoire while providing very doable delicious food.

Interesting cookbook
I like the way they mix American and Asian flavors... so unusual to see cheese and Chinese together, but it actually works in a very experimental and tasty way.

These Recipes Are Not for Chinese Chinese Food--but for Pan Asian-American Fusion
I feel bad writing a negative review because the authors include pictures of their family, including adorable kids, which makes you feel the personal side of what went into writing this cookbook. So, I hope they don't take this personally, if they read it. I bought the book because the title says "Chinese Food", but that title is egregiously misleading. The vast majority of the recipes are for pan-Asian/Western style fusion food. Many include dairy and other ingredients that stray too far from Chinese cuisine (American, Russian, Japanese, and Western European flavors instead), and which will not be digestible to many of those with East Asian palates. (Full disclosure: I am half Chinese and half Western European, so I am not opposed to fusions--but I do expect my "Chinese" food to stick to Chinese ingredients, if it is not labeled "fusion". All that dairy would make me sick!). I will be returning this book to Amazon for a refund, as I just can't bring myself to adulterate the cuisine of my ancestors in such ways. However, if you want a fusion cookbook, this may be for you. For me, it's just a huge disappointment.
