good self exercises for health and happiness
It’s a lot of information. I like how it’s organized and covers the whole body. I wish they had videos where we can learn the exercises, it’s hard to follow on paper. It will take a while to learn them. I’ll choose some that fit my lifestyle, because I can’t see myself doing all these in a day. I wish…But definitely some are super doable. We are waiting for videos… or maybe they are on YouTube already? I’ll check.Thank you.

a way to help regulate energy within your own body (and a gentler alternative to, say, chi-gong exercises)
To appreciate Do-In, you probably need an in-person demonstration, which I was lucky enough to get. But once introduced, this book was a way for further self-study.During the session where I was introduced to Do-In, I had a cold and had been coughing. At the end of the session, my cough had noticeably settled. We did the exercises while sitting quietly in a chair. First, we raised our hands over our heads (breathing in), then lowered them to dangle relaxed. After a few of these "to gather energy", we held our hands in a praying position, with thumbs touching the vocal chords, while chanting the "Su" sound for 2-3 times. This allowed our hands to gather the energy we had mustered. Then we placed our own hands quietly over parts of our face, holding them gently in place for perhaps a minute in each location "until we felt the energy flow". It is better to be alone, or at least very quiet, while doing this, as you need to monitor inside your body to know when to move the hands to the next position. We did all over our head, then our necks, shoulders and arms, then our body, then our legs and feet. And at the end of it, I had stopped coughing and did not start again. It can work. Try to find a teacher.

Helpful photos
I learned Do-In at the Kushi Institute in Becket, MA in Jan/Feb 2013. There was a class every morning, Monday through Friday, 7-8am, each day with a different teacher. Some classes were variations of Do-In, and others followed closely to what was in a handout we were given. I loved doing it and felt much stronger after a month of it. I wanted the book to deepen my knowledge and perhaps learn some helpful variations. The sequence we learned at Kushi Institute (KI), that is on the handout from there, is different from what is in the book. The first half of the KI set seems to be a blend of the morning, evening, and special exercises in this book. The second half of the KI set is Do-In self-massage (it's wonderful!), and that is very close to the "General Exercises" (starts on page 157) in the book. The book is full of interesting information, but if I hadn't experienced Do-In before reading it, I don't think the book alone would have gotten me into the practice. I'm glad I bought the book, and will continue to study what's in it.

An interesting book but without hands on lessons this book would be confusing to most people not into the martial arts.
As someone who has been involved in numerous martial arts (Karate-Do, Judo, Jujitsu, Kenjutsu, Tai Chi) and physical fitness programs (Aerobics, HITT, Navy SEAL workout programs) I am always interested in new or unique approaches to fitness and self-defense. I recently purchased this somewhat confusing 208 page soft cover volume (The DO-IN WAY: gentle exercises to liberate the body, mind, and spirit by Michio Kushi) on Amazon for a bargain price.I was surprised and somewhat disappointed at the same time at the amount of detailed esoteric information this book contained. This complex book is organized into two parts. Part one covers an introduction to Shin-Sen-Do and the physical, mental and spiritual development. It goes into great detail on the principles and mystical philosophy involved in the study of “Do-In Way.” The second part explains and shows the numerous exercises of “Do-In Way.”In fact, it has so many different exercises that you would have to spend the entire day to get through all of them. There are special exercises, daily spiritual exercises, other daily exercises, and more general exercises. If you are seeking a simple and easy to follow exercise program, the “Do-In Way” IS NOT FOR YOU. This particular program takes as much, if not more, time and dedication as the many martial arts I have studied over the last 60 years of training. This is why I gave the book only 3 stars. This is not a book that is easy to read or understand without combining it with guidance from a “Do-In Way” instructor.Rating: 3 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems).

Insightful
Wonderful beginners explanation into Do-In practice. Using the downloadable version, pictures were quite fuzzy, but the general jist was there. I will definitely recommend this to all who want to naturally take control of their body and life. Enlightening!

And Do-In predates yoga by 5,000 years...
In 2012, I learned that yoga is an entire health care system and purchased every book I could find. I practice Do-In since my heart attack and rereading this book found similar information. All of this material comes or came from a similar source. Just study any of the marshall arts (my definition of collective treasury of information.

Classic, timeless, wonderful work.
I wish this book could be updated to include modifications from say, a yoga therapy or functional movement screen perspective. Some of these traditional exercises are just plain dangerous for a wide range and variety of back problems, and hip flexor tightness. Regardless, take the wisdom and alter to your body or under the guidance of a good movement specialist.

Wonderful exercises
It is macrobiotic. The exercises are wonderful and very easy to do, and make you feel just great. I really enjoyed the book and its message of "enlightment."

The Do-In Way
This book is an essential book for anyone who is interested in the well-being of body, mind and spirit. It is a practical explanation of ways to help us become more comfortable in our every day lives and to reach higher levels of peace and serenity. It takes into account our whole being within the context of the universe.Thank you Amazon for making this book available in electronic format since I could not access my original copy which is in a box somewhere in a storage area from a move I did many years ago! I was so surprised to see that the book had been transferred and was available.I would also like to thank Michio Kushi the author, for writing such a brilliant book.Marc.

The book is easy to read.
I haven’t read the whole book yet. I studied macrobiotics years ago and found this book simply reinforced and added to the knowledge I already new.
