A Caldecott Honor Book with remastered artwork for its 75th anniversary! Clever soldiers outwit greedy townspeople with the creation of a special soup in this cherished classic. Three soldiers come marching down the road towards a French village. The peasants, seeing them coming, suddenly become very busy, for soldiers are often hungry. All their food is hidden under mattresses or in barns. Then follows a battle of wits, with the soldiers equal to the occasion. Why, of course—even with no food, they can still make a wonderful soup! All they will need is three round stones. But to make a truly perfect stone soup, they will of course also need a carrot or two…a cabbage…and so it goes. First published in 1947, Marcia Brown’s retelling of a French folktale is a picture book classic. Her lively art creates a festival of activity, of dancing and laughter, that young readers will want to experience again and again. Review: One of the most subversively powerful stories we give children. - On the surface, Stone Soup is a simple folktale: strangers arrive, a “magical” stone becomes an excuse for everyone to contribute, and a village ends up sharing a feast no one believed they could afford. But the deeper lesson is extraordinary: Scarcity dissolves when everyone brings what they already have. There’s no hero. No sacrifice. No punishment. Just a reminder that community is built from participation, not perfection. In a world where adults are constantly told: • “you’re on your own,” • “protect what’s yours,” • “resources are limited,” Stone Soup quietly teaches the opposite operating system: abundance emerges from collaboration, not hoarding. It’s the kind of story that lodges in the nervous system and grows with you. Read it to a kid, but notice what it says to the adults in the room too. We would be living in a very different society if more of us remembered this tale is not fantasy — it’s instruction. Review: A classic - A classic about sharing! I told granddaughter to donate it to school library or public library after reading

My Favorite Childhood Book
I decided to order my favorite childhood books. These beloved books were read to me by Captain Kangaroo. I also purchased several others he read to many of us. I realize now these were important stories and he knew it. Most of them were about giving and being kind to others. So in honor of him and introducing these memorable books, I purchased the Originally illustrated choices. Some are not very fancy or colorful, but they mean the world to me.

Read this to your children
I had this when I was a child, and ordered this to read to my Pre-K class. It shares a wonderful message and I believe has the same illustrations from the book I had. Very nostalgic.

Great book
I bought this book for my six year old grandson and we read it every night before bed. I love how it tells about sharing with others and how the peasants had changed their minds at the end.

Stone Soup
This is an age-old tale that children love to dramatize. Hungry soldiers are shunned because resources are drained at the end of war. But the clever soldiers say they are making stone soup, and call upon the community to add one element after another into the pot. The needed vegetables and meats appear as the fascinated villagers note that soup can be made with stones. Elementary children love to dramatize this story as it is told.

Great connection with families and cooking!
We used this book as a give away to a family event. The parents and children loved how the story extended as they cleaned, chopped and cooked soup for themselves. They got to take their creations home with them.

Great version of a heart-warming fable!
Lovely narration. Classically paced. Illustrations are a refreshing change to the colour-attack, clipart, emoji-faced, budget drawings you see in 98% of illustrated books. Perfect for my Reception class. How, on Earth, did you get it to me so fast? 19 hours. I almost feel sorry for the people responsible for maintaining that level of efficiency.
