The classic Egyptian grammar. A tremendous work.

It is a wonderful reference despite its age. It is a beautiful book, the glyphs are large and easy to read. The sign list is the most informative and the easiest to use of any that I have seen. After working through Allen where each chapter deals with a single grammatical subject, I find the more integrated approach of Gardiner helpful as a reference and refresher. Very early he gives a simplified general overview of sentence types and nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives and a form of the sDm.f verb. In each chapter he introduces a vocabulary that is then used in the exercises. And yes there is a key to Egyptian to English exercises available online by Mark-Jan Nederhof. Though the later chapters dealing with specific verb types is dated, the examples and exercises are still informative.My only complaint is that the newly reprinted (2020) copy of the 1957 book had a bad smell that took a couple of weeks to fade away.

Well, when I bought this edition, after to see a e book, this seems to me very interesting, I thought this book should help me to understand ancient Egyptian. My surprise was it was some bigger than I thought. This really is a great edition, very clear printing and good size in fonts, paper is high quality and hardcover is great.Gardiner's Grammar is a good point to start for beginners, vocabulary, exercises and explanation has very nice equilibrium in this volume, you will think you are learning a modern language with this book.With a few lessons you'll begin to understand small passage and grow up in interest in Egypt. You will think if there are an e book edition why you should buy a printed edition, well when you have the book in front you, you feel transported in time, this feeling is the worth of the book.

This book is a standard! The coverage of the language is very thorough. Anyone who is a serious student of the Egyptian language starts with this grammar.

This book has a lot of comprehensive material for any serious student of Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I don't know how long it will stay in print, so I wanted to make sure I had my own copy.Tim Wiedman

What can I say. It's the standard for Egyptian Hieroglyphs study. Very reasonable price, hard cover, very good quality!

I found this book to be more for those with some level of linguistics background as well as a good grasp of English grammar. Have a thesaurus and dictionary handy as some archaic terms are used (this book was written in mid-20th century by a Brit).This book is a good resource for those wanting to study the Mdr-Ntr. It should be in your library if you are serious about learning this ancient language. It can also be a primer for learning Arabic and Hebrew. The only thing this book lacks is an answer key to help you if you get stuck in some of the many exercises included within.

I was taking a university course with a different book, and the PhD teaching the course stated that the Gardiner was the reference most widely accepted, especially when it came to the tables of Egyptian hieroglyphics and their classifications at the end of the book. It is a complete reference of the symbols used and more detailed than the book we were using.

I’m very pleased with the purchase.

The book was in excellent condition and I am quite happy with it.

Its a great book. But I had expected some images of the hieroglyphs as well for a better visual clarity. There was none !Also in some cases the hieroglyphs are in too small font .
