What's the point of this? Does flipping truly make a better waffle? How so?

No, it really doesn't. I have a cheap waffle maker that doesn't flip and it cooks perfectly on both sides. I had this flip waffle maker at one time and the handle connections broke while trying to wash it. It maybe had a dozen uses before breaking.

There are actually 3 products pictured - one with red and green, one with green only, and the one with the dial and power in the base. I used the 'image report tool' only to get told that that one in particular (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/417o6JERgML.jpg) needs "no change" to the image.

Does the product monitor the waffle for doneness or is the ready indicator based on elapsed cooking time?

The ready light indicates w/I is ready and hot . The only way to determine if the waffle is cooked to proper doneness if watch steam, steam means cooking NO steam is cooked and ready ( From Manuel) makes great waffles.

How thick are the waffles?

Thicker than the frozen kind. I use a waffle mix and add milk instead of water too.
