could use larger photographs
The photographs need to be larger. Apart from that this is an important guide which covers countries which are too often lacking in information about snakes.

The publisher blew it
Not a bad resource, but the descriptions don't include important behaviors. For example, the Malayan pit viper is one of the most dangerous snakes in SEA because it doesn't move when threatened. It stays completely still until the threat is within striking distance. Nothing is mentioned about this behavior, or it's consequences. I would consider this essential information for a field guide. Also, the book is very small, like a field guide. If it wasn't meant as a field guide, they should have increased the size of the type, which is so tiny it's difficult to read. The photos could have been better as well. Though mostly adequate, they are rather small and some are so dark or poorly framed as to be almost useless. Of course, increasing the size of the type and the photos would have made the book larger. Nevertheless, I think larger type and larger photos would have improved it's usefulness.Still, the book does contain a lot of information and includes nearly all the snakes one might encounter in SEA. And it is very compact. Too much so, in my opinion.

A decent field guide for southeast Asia. I Definitely recommend it if you plan on looking for snakes in Southeast Asia.

Handy guide for SouthEast Asian snakes.
This is small and would be good to pack with you as a field guide. The book feels stout and well made the pages are thick and glossy. This lacks range maps and in depth information. If you simply need a guide that will help you identify snakes in Southeast Asia this will help you I'm certain. The photos are crisp and done well. I would have preferred some range maps, and natural history.

Very Poor Reference - no information as to which are venomous.
The utility of this book is quite low. I bought it to help identify which snakes are poisonous. Sadly, this book does not provide that information. The photographs are nice, and that is the only reason I am keeping it. But as a reference book it virtually useless. My family and I spend substantial time in Southeast Asia every year, and this book was ordered to help us avoid danger. Valueless for that purpose.

Perfect field guide
Dr Das, has done it again and produced another useful guide to the snakes of South east Asia. I recommend all of his recent published photo guides- India, Sri Lanka and Borneo. The larger work he published on the Reptiles of SE Asia was wrongly called a field guide, but was too large to take out of the home! This present book has addressed that problem perfectly. The book contains an excellent check list of snakes of the area, a good index and a really large and useful bibliography. The photos are outstanding and the notes are concise and well written. For snake lovers everywhere this is a perfect guide. If you intend to visit the rainforests of Malaysia or Borneo any time soon, in search of snakes, then this is the guide for you!

good field guide
Excellent photos and a good basic guide to the snakes of the area. The one improvement I would recommend would be to highlight the poisonous species

Natuatist's Guide to the Snakes of South-East Asia.
Great little book on snakes. A must for any one going to wonder the jungles of South-East Asia. Very useful for its size, with lots of colour photos. The book is small and ideal for a rucksack. Good hunting.
