Dvorák: The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra [DVD]

Performances to treasure
I am offended by the other reviewer's comments about the recording of the piano concerto, which is in my opinion stunning. Rudolf Firkusny was the greatest interpreter of the concerto, which he played for over 50 years. I have many recordings of him playing it, beginning with a 1954 recording with George Szell and Cleveland. This recording was made in 1992, when he was 80, two years before he died. None of his recordings, in my opinion, match this one. The heart-breaking slow movement has never been played better, more delicately and haunting in its melancholy beauty. The outer movements are muscular where they need to be, and tender when they need to be. Firkusny was at the top of his playing here, in front of a loving Prague audience including the President Vaclav Havel. To suggest, as the reviewer does that the performance shows Firkusny's age -- in an negative way -- is in my opinion, not only musically ignorant, but offensive. Buy this and watch it over and over. You will be amazed.

Aged but Good Recording
The cello concerto is well performed. The piano concerto is vintage and relects the pianist's vintage. The sound is not as good in the piano concerto as in the cello. Picture qaulity is good.
