Analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon

Hendrickson Edition is a great book!
When I realized about Analytical Lexicon I had curiosity about Biblical Hebrew's ones. I bought two Analytical Lexicon in Greek, one for my LXX's Old Testament copy and other for New Testament, those make my studies very quickly and interesting. Then I was decided to buy this book taking as reference my experience with other two dictionaries.Well my Hebrew is not very good, then I tried first with a small sentence: Genesis 1:8 Ve yiqra' elohim la raqiyah shamayim. My first trying was frustrating, but I took a second chance. Because of I have studied some Hebrew before and I have a concise hebrew lexicon too, I found: elohim (God), shamayim (Heaven), la (to) and ve (And) easy, this doesn't justified by itself the buying, but the words yiqra' and raqiyah without an Analytical Lexicon are very difficult to find the root and meaning:1) yiqra' is niphal of qr' (qof resh aleph): to name or to call: this means then: it was named or he named.2) raqiyah is an special word hard to find in a normal Hebrew-English dictionary because the root is rq' (resh qof ayin), but easy with Analytical Lexicon, that means: to empty; but if you read with more attention you'll fine inside of root rq' meanings the words raqiyah: the expanse vulg.: the firmament. and after some minutes to understand how to use this lexicon translation was: And God named the emptiness heaven. Finally I justified the buy with this. I recommend this one, if your are really interesting in find real meaning of the words of Masoretic Text of Old Testament and the Tanakh.Really Hendrickson Edition isn't a lexicon for those who hasn't studied anything of Hebrew, but is an invaluable tool for unexperienced students like me to find quickly the root of the words specially the verbs.About Hendrickson edition, hardcover are very good, and pages very strong, the printed font really is very small, specially in reference mark, but with a magnifying glass you can solve this situation. Some heavy, I recommend this for home studies, this is not a pocket edition, buy you'll find this very useful.

What do you do when the power is out?
Like many pastors I have all the whiz-bang computer programs needed to do a careful study of the Hebrew text before preparing the sermon for Sunday. With a few touches of the buttons on the keypad--all the secrets of the text are laid before me on the computer screen... But what does one do when one is not at the computer, or you have traveled out of town, or the power is out? How does one proceed then? Davidson's book is old, dated, the print is not easy to read, and then there is the time element--it seems so slow to look up the words and to find the grammatical information, ugh!! Especially when one is used to having it at the tips of one's fingertips on the computer. But I belong to he generation that used to do things prior to the computer! I know, I know I'm old--I learned to type on a manual typewriter banging away on the keys and getting the white-out from the desk top when a mistake was made!!! Times have changed. But do not overlook this book. It is worth having on the shelf, particularly when one needs the lexical information and the computer is not available, or when one is at the beach, or so on. Then this book becomes a must have!!!! This is certainly "old-stying" it as they say, but sometimes old-styling is well worth it!! Buy the book, use the book, enjoy the book.

Easy to Use
This book was great to use for translating a lot of Hebrew Scripture. I used it in combination with the Brown Drivers Briggs Lexicon. This lexicon has EVERY word from the hebrew bible in aleph- bet order (except! Vav-consecutives) This book almost felt like cheating. It doesn't provide the definition most of the time, but it gives you to root and the parsing of the verb. Then I would take the root to the BDB Lexicon to get the definition. In combination with the BDB, I would take on all hebrew translations!I would recommend and I do use it for seminary on a regular basis.

BUY THIS!
If you want to study the Hebrew scriptures and want quick access to the words you are not familiar with, this is the book! The Hebrew font is not the best, however very good. on a 1-10, I'd say a 9. This is not coined to Strong's. Which means it would only be helpful to a serious Bible student, with at least a knowledge of the Heberew alphabet. For those, the Strong's just gets in the way anyhow. The front of the book has an extensive section explaining in detail, the different aspect of Hebrew grammar. An excellent refresher, or foundation to anyone studying Biblical Hebrew. Each word listing also has the three letter root word listed on the reverse side of the page. Very convenient. It is a very beautifully bound book, very affordable, and very informative. Definately a great buy. I am a Hebrew student attempting to master the Scriptures, and I need to look no further for an excellent Hebrew lexicon.

Excellent introductory or review tool
This was an addition to my library and a used item. It was in excellent condition and was delivered on time. I like this volume as it is easier to use for new students. All entries are provided alphabetical order. For the student who is already familiar with the forms this would be annoying as they are not listed together, but alphabetic. HALOT is what I turn to for most of my work, however, for new students this is a good starter tool as long as they are weaned off quickly. Definitions provided are very limited and although it contains form charts there is very little explanation.

The Best and easy to use Lexicon I have seen
When it comes to Lexicons this is the only one I will use, or suggest to others. This text makes it so easy to first find a word, then investigate the shoresh. The style of having the word on the left and having the shoresh on the right, which the reader can go and look up works perfectly for me. I learned most of my Biblical Hebrew from using this Lexicon alone. The areas of the book that may be a little hard to read are the grammer elements. I used other books for the grammer of Biblical Hebrew, but that did not take away from the value of this Lexicon. I will say that this Lexicon is for a somewhat seasoned veteran of the Hebrew language, but once you get the hang of how it works it is perfect.
